Hey everyone, Im trying to gauge how the transmissions hold up the extra power of superchargers. Ive got a 4runner and am looking at the URD kit and to be honest there aren't many 4runners with forced induction so its hard to gauge the reliability of the drivetrain. Since we have the same drivetrains I figured there are a lot more Tacomas running around S/C'ed so I have a larger audience to get data from.

Ive searched around the tacoma forums as well and it seems like the transmissions are holding up well for the most part but I wanted to ask since you guys would know more. Thanks in advance!

I have my supercharger for 2 years and about 27000 miles and I haven't had any issues. There is a valve body modification for it, but I am on the fence about installing it. The videos I have seen shows it shifts sooner. Maybe it's just the videos though.

no s/c for me, heck I don't even own an auto trans but I believe the 5spd auto was designed for the 1st tundra v8. it is renowned as being pretty strong

Exactly. The 5 speed auto was originally meant to sit behind the 4.7 Tundra V8. In fact, the 2nd Gen Tacoma shares much of the same design and parts as the first generation Tundra.

I actually have the earlier 4 speed, mines an 04 (last year of the 4spd) but I figure the quality and capabilities are very similar. Im sure the newer 5 speeds are probably a little beefier but not by much and its the closest comparison I could think of.

Im looking at the URD kit for my 04 4Runner, Ive got the aux transmission cooler and I also have a fan and switch for it since I tow often with it. Heres a couple pics-

    Pics of the Rig:

As you can see its pretty far from stock, I also have rear airbags to eliminate sagging since its a soft suspension setup. I also have a prodigy P3 brake controller for safety. Now because of how much I have into the rig and it fits 95% of what I need it to do I really would prefer to keep it and not have to start over from scratch with a truck that would be better suited for towing. So Im on the fence about spending the $6K to supercharge it, but that would ensure that the 4runner is capable and reliable enough to do everything I need it to do. Plus its paid off so thats always a plus!

Thanks for the help and info everyone!

didn't realize you had 4spd. awesome runner by the way!

I would look back and see if Toyota ever offered it as an option when the vehicle was new, with no effect to warranty. I imagine they did, and I imagine your trans would be fine with or without their consent.

especially seeing as to how you seem to want it for utility, not the drag-strip lol.

Thanks for the compliments! They never offered the TRD package for the 03-04s but they did offer them on several other trucks with the same trans. Its really difficult to gauge this so I figured the 5 speed is the closest I can compare it to. I know there are a ton of variables and a lot of failures that came with the TRD package wasn't the actual mechanical parts that were the problems it was normally the tuning that lead to failures.

I figured since the 5 speed was the closest comparison I could think of I would research these and there are a lot more S/C'ed tacomas out there than 4runners to gather data from
