Yes. Oil filter wrenches are made to remove oil filters. NEVER to install them. Just a thought..If I had that threaded oil filter pipe in my hand, I'd look for a nut with threads that fit and use the nut to tighten the fitting into the block. I'm not sure how easy it would be to find such a nut, but I'd look.

Yes that was what is mentioned by someone else using two nuts butted up to provide you a way to torque it down into the block.

Im also thinking, there is a gap in the middle where its smooth - no threads between the two sides. Wonder if it will only take one nut down to that and it will be forced to stop and then i can use it to get it in tight. Hope my part comes in today!

Id reccomend using a strap wrench or, even better, a pipe extractor (also called a internal pipe wrench, nipple extractor).

Check the male and female threads on the nipple to make sure they're good.
The nipple should thread in with little resistance for the first 1/4 or so if it's threads are intact.

Its most likely the filter itself that is cross threaded.

Like others said, throw some loctite on there once you get it back in.

I never had to use tools to remove any oil filter (fingers crossed) usually use some sandpaper around the filter to get a better grip. I hope toyota didn't put it on too tight when I do my first OC on the taco...

Double nut method, just like a stud. Rich had it the first page.

I was only pointing out an alternative method.
In case the OP didn't have any nuts laying about. :D

Happened to my GF a few weeks ago changing the oil in her Harley. She came and got me and I got it off the filter and put it on the new one and just screwed it back in by hand.

The nut will jam against the bottom of the threads with as much torque as you apply to install the nipple.

IE: It will either remove the nipple from the soft aluminum housing when you try to back the nut off, or it will at least back off some of the torque... leaving you where you are now a couple of oil changes down the road.

Just a quick question regarding op's situation. But is it possible he could get that nipple at lowes or hd? I know they have an abundance of male male nipples. In the event toyota doesn't have it in stock?

That sounds kind of scary, it's likely metric, and the part it screws into is $$$. But I suppose it might be possible.

I've seen what happens when someone tries to install an SAE fitting into a Metric one, not pretty, and not something you want to happen to your engine, of all things.

Didn't mean to post it is. Meant is it. I meant it as a question. Wasn't sure if you could get metric at lowes. What about fastenal?

Sorry, didn't take it that way. I have no idea if Lowes, etc have metric. I also don't know if it would be pipe thread or regular bolt/screw thread. Just seemed to be a big risk to take using anything other than OEM.

You mean like this part? :D
    http://www.lowes.com/pd_22030-29760-20500_0__?productId=3418898&Ntt=nipple&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dnipple&facetInfo

    Drawbacks vs OEM
    - No allen key wrench flats
    - Thread quality looks very poor, may break more easily than OEM.

EDIT: Lowes part is pipe thread, likely wouldn't fit.

Even if they have metric that big, it's a 3/4-16 thread on the filter side.
Hardware store definitely will not have that.

Dealer item, or turn your own on a lathe.

And FWIW, Lowes and Depot do not have anything in 3/4 machine thread.

^Not as bad as a suspension bracket I bent on my previous car (Mazda Millenia) - had to be dropshipped from Hiroshima.

I see. Aside from the different thread form, 3/4 NPT is 14 TPI rather than 16, so it wouldn't work.
