Cummins makes many different types of engines, the boat I work on has two V16 Cummins and a V8 Cummins. We change our oil every 500 hours (15,000 miles equivalent using 30 mph average speed) and they are very reliable. The V8 burns about 7.25 Gallons per hour at 1800 RPM (equivalent of about 10.3 MPG) but it's a bit bigger than the average truck engine. Actually it's bigger than the average truck... Would be awesome to be able to get a Tundra/Cummins combo if only the Tundra didn't have such an ugly front end.

According to the article: "WardsAuto is suggesting that a Cummins engine could be a placeholder for Toyota, after prohibitively high development costs forced them to shelve a pickup diesel powerplant they were developing themselves in collaboration with their heavy-truck brand Hino. An outsourced engine would be an easier way for Toyota to test the waters on demand for a Tundra diesel without making quite as aggressive of an investment. Some say CAFE fuel economy standards will make a diesel option a necessity for the Tundra."

The reason given for the V8 in the upcoming Nissan Titan is that the truck was not designed for an inline 6. Not enough room under the hood.

Makes me wonder what all the Cummins loyalist are saying about having a Cummins diesel engine on Japanese badge truck.

Competition is great for the market, but will this sway the loyalist to switch over.

Probably the same things the GM guys say about having an Izuzu engine in a US-branded truck.

I bet if they really go through with this their biggest buyer group will be existing Tundra owners that tow stuff more than just around the farm. The 5.7L pulls great but it wants to be fed. The darn thing won't go 200 miles before it runs out of gas! Offer a diesel that can pull the same trailer getting 13-15 mpg and there'll be used 3UR trucks for sale everywhere.
