I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
I would just go to dealer, see if they can toss on the machine and get oil pressure reading.

Here is something that may apply... and I found searching for oil issues

Well, I was planning on picking up a new 14 model next weekend but this has me worried. Do they all seem to do this or are there quite a few out there with a decent amount of miles that do not make weird engine noises?

Thanks guys. I'll keep an eye on this thread. I seem to have "rare" luck sometimes and not in a good way!

If possible, start the truck you intend to buy on a cold morning--the closer to freezing the better. The noise will be there, or it won't.

Don't get too worried--the VAST majority of taco's out there are absolutely fine. Reading these threads can make you a mechanical hypochondriac. I say that even though my '14 is one of the ones with issues. :anonymous:

Taking mine in Monday, drove about a 100 miles today, when I went slow I could hear the whining noise also, which would change if I sped up or slowed down (kind of like an electric golf cart, don't know how else to describe it ) this was after driving over an hour at 80 degrees outside temperature and the truck already at normal temp :(

I'm really bummed out with this, haven't been able to enjoy the truck as all I can think about when I get in the truck is the noise... There are 4 more Tacomas (2012,2013 and 2014) where I work, none of them do this, the owners were freaked out when they heard mine.... so its deffinetly not normal :(

I keep looking at this thread hoping someone found an answer...

Wow your does it even after warm up? Mine does it every single morning even if it's warm out. I am extremely upset by this as I am fed up with defects after the 3 years of issues with my last car. Hoping it's a simple oil delivery issue and can be fixed quickly.

Yup doesn't matter if its cold outside or not, it does it anytime the truck has been sitting for a while, and when the truck is already at normal temperature you can still hear it a bit, sometimes I also get the noise I described while driving. :(

I picked mine up from the service center yesterday--they had it for almost two weeks.

My engine front cover was replaced, complete with the water pump and oil pump--the tech explained that this comes as a pre-assembled unit. The service manager had a tech drive the truck home and cold start it the following morning, then drive it back to the dealership before calling me. By the time I got home I'd guess that the new pumps have about 100 miles on them (things are kind of spread apart in western CO).

This morning it was 18 degrees when I started it, so plenty cold enough for the noise to appear. I am very pleased to say that it did not. There was a faint sound similar to the one I recorded, but again, very faint--the kind of sound I associate with a "healthy" engine coming to life on a cold morning. Other than that, the V6 happily ticked away in Tacoma fashion.

I will post an update if the sound has not reappeared in two weeks, and I'll definitely update you all if it reappears before then.

I wasn't able to speak with the service manager, but in conversation with the tech I explained the prevalence of this problem, and he definitely agreed. He said, "The factory acknowledges that there is a noise." I think this is company-speak for an issue widespread enough to warrant some kind of TSB. Anybody know where can we look for that?

A plug for Bighorn Toyota in Glenwood Springs--they've been super helpful, kept me informed, furnished an AWD loaner as soon as I asked for one, and gave me a fully detailed truck back. (Yes, in 2400 miles I can get one pretty dirty.)

Epa4wd--that really stinks! What has the dealership said? You should definitely mention this thread, and give them my and Hotrod53's dealership's names and numbers--they're in the thread a few pages back.

No feedback from the dealership so far, I will mention this thread specifically the parts replaced in your truck. The fact that yours got solved gives me some relief.

Right now, we're kind of all over the target-- hotrod53 getting a shortblock, me with a front cover & pumps, scottalot with a reflash... I'm not sure if there's much to go on yet.

UPDATE: I had hoped that it wouldn't come to this.....

I just found out that the short block was installed and it makes the same noise! I am going to the dealership tomorrow to discuss the situation, I already told them that I'm lemoning it and I have already called Toyota and started a case.

Apparently the noise isn't as loud and is a little different now, but never the less, it's still there I'm going to hear it myself tomorrow while it's still cold. All in all, the more that I thought about this situation, this is probably the best outcome yet I'm not looking forward to the hassle that is sure to follow.

That sucks! -But then again, now you have a pretty solid lemon case. Let us know what happens tomorrow.

It confuses me that our engine sounds, which are so similar, are turning out so differently. Of course, my sound could come back--you had said that it was about two weeks from the time you got yours back to the next cold morning. I won't feel 100% confident that mine is completely fixed for a few more weeks.

Im glad that some are being fixed, but I too am puzzled by the variety of "fixes" that are being thrown at our trucks. I am going to take a video of my truck starting up tomorrow morning so I have something to show the dealer when I go in, I am aware that I will have to leave it over night so they can hear it in the morning but at least I can show the video so they know what I'm talking about.

I highly recommend the video idea, that's what I did. I emailed it to my Service Manager and I was told that it went all the way to Corporate. That really helps avoid the "could not duplicate" results.
