Hey everyone. My 2013 has a bunch of tiny surface rust starting all across the rear chrome bumper. Has anyone else had this problem? Could I buff it off and put some finish on it? Toyota lost points in my book.

Thanks. So is there a way to remove it and protect it from happening again?

Since you're under warranty. I'd have the dealership deal with it.

Steel wool works well on chrome. Just use fine steel wool. I had to steel wool the nastiest rust off of my bosses super old impala's rims today and it looked 1000x times better. It went from large nasty red spots to small little spots.

    Would clay bar work?

Thanks a lot for all the input. I will phone the dealer and see if it is covered by warranty. It looks like rust that will start eating through the metal if left unchecked. I can take pictures of it too.

It was just washed the other day but already has some crud on it so it's a little hard to see. It looks worse in person, the lighting and cell phone camera didn't do their justice but I'm at work. Thanks

If you need a better picture I will have to wash it again and brush the bumper then take one with my DSLR.

Looks like rail dust. Clay bar it and put a good coat of polish on it. It's on your paint also, but can't see it, due to your dark color.

That use to occur on my white Touareg tailgate. Clay bar removed it all.

So the whole vehicle needs to be clay barred? I don't want it eroding my paint prematurely either. Not sure how this happened, my past two vehicles, one being silver, never had this problem and they were 1996 and 2002 models...

    Don't touch it.
Take it in and have it checked.
I have changed a few because of premature rust.
If you keep playing with it they might not do anything.
Your going to have to let go and let it rust up.
    It's your decision....

I'm told the brakes throw off debris which causes this...

So let it rust up so it looks worse then they will have to change it? How long is the body under warranty for though? I'm already at 34,000 km / 21,000 mi.

Honestly I would bring it in now and tell them it's unacceptable. If they don't do anything then do a test area with a clay bar....

Will do. It is unacceptable. I expect a quality unit all around when I purchase it brand new. I'm pretty adament about stuff like this. Maybe they can take a look at the squeaking suspension too. Sigh...

There ya go. I have a 2013 as well and if I see any rust on the bumpers I would be all over it. The squeaking must be very annoying.

Yes, brakes do throw off debris that causes this like MMILES said.
Clay bar will not hurt paint/clear coat/ chrome at all. It pulls out any debris from paint. Check it out on Mothers website. I do all vehicles every spring. Dealer will tell you it's rail dust. Look at any light colored vehicle in salted road area's, you'll see it.
Can't hurt to see what dealer say's. Sometimes they due it for you, they did it once on one of mine.
