I think my truck was just trying to evolve into a 4x4 beast.

I actually constantly checked to make sure everything was ok, and not rubbing anything in every direction. I thought something must had been rubbing somewhere, but I could never see anything out of place. Whether that's my own mechanical inexperience, I don't know, but it probably is.

Ha. That probably could've been it too.

As far as I know, it was. The only thing I've ever done anything with the suspension was putting that spacer on. The cotter pin used, was the original one already in place. I put it back on the way I saw it was before. The pin is supposed to flare out, around the nut right?

Wow. Thanks man. It's crazy how long it lasted being reformed. I put that spacer on my senior year of high school, back in 2010. Still, could've been way worse and am still very lucky it happened today at a gas station instead of in a potentially much more dangerous scenario. And I did buy a new castle nut with a new pin, installed like B.

Hope this can be a lesson to the rest of tacomaworld, and not just me.

Lessons learned on some else expense, never reuse a .15 cent cotter pin, could of been a mess going down interstate , glad you are ok.

I saw this happen on the highway to a 2 gen tacoma 3 days ago... The wheel just turned over after the guy who was behind me didn't see a huge pothole and hit it. The wheel went right under the truck and he drove it 300 yards till he stopped. Sparks flying everywhere. You were lucky!!!

Geez that's crazy. Yeah, I can't get it out of my head how lucky I got.

Thanks for all the support guys. My truck is fine for the most part, going in tomorrow for a check up and alignment, fix and/or replace anything that needs to be. Hopefully this can lead to an excuse somewhere to go for a 6 inch lift

Did I just start Cotter Pin Awareness Week?

Lifting it higher = further to fall.:D:eek:

Was the tapered hole in the top of the spindle OK? I would be suspect of it being pounded out from running loose, possibly the tapered stub on the ball joint as well. If the taper doesn't fit tightly, it could work loose again over time.

When you assembled it previously, did you torque the nut? Of do it the dutch method of "Guetd'n'tite"? I'm not saying it can't be done without a torque wrench, but I strongly suspect that the nut wasn't tight from way back, thus working against the already fatiqued (from re-use) cotter pin.

Glad it was relitively minor with no injuries or major damage.

^^ Two in the rear actually, since its four channel ABS. Wait, that sounded a bit crude at first. Trying again, there are two rear brake hoses. Better! I would personally only change the one unless the others show signs of deterioration, or you feel its a good enough excuse to by SS braided lines.:)

I actually bought a whole new ball joint when I went to get a castle nut. They didn't have just the nut, so I just bought a whole new ball joint. My main goal was to at least to be able to get out the parking lot and get the truck home. I don't remember if I had torqued the nut or not when I put the lift on, but whatever I did, obviously didn't work out in the long run.

I am planning on replacing whatever needs to be replaced. If I had done the same thing on the driver's side as I did the passenger's side, there should be some chance that the same thing could happen again.

Today, I took the truck to the local Toyota dealership service building (I know, dealership stealership, but they have the only certified Toyota techs in the area, everyone I've talked to loves them, and I'm working on a video/commercial for them so they personally know me). Have an appointment tomorrow morning for a tech to check out everything, fix, and alignment.
I showed them that picture, "Holy hell man! Goin hard huh?!"

What's the torque specs for that nut. Got me thinking since I had all those shakes in the front

Oh yeah they're good as far as I can tell. I had to help interview just about every mechanic, tech, and sales employee. They all seemed honest and incredibly passionate. Plus, the owner is a local, went to the local college, and grew up with most business owners in the area. I don't have any worries about them. Hopefully they can get everything in check

Of course the dealership ended up quoting me $6000 for a repair.

Although they were extremely nice, and the tech walked me through everything that he could see that was off, I will not pay $6000 for new brake pads, new ball joints, new sway bar connections, and an alignment.

The lady who wrote up the quote, seemed to add a whole lot of stuff that the tech never told me. I believe the tech, he seemed honest with me and everything he showed me, he described and explained what and why. Those things being the brake pads, ball joints, sway bar connections.

He also gave me props to the redneck job I did in a parking lot, just saying the nut could be a little tighter.

Anybody have any insight to this? Just don't want to run into more future problems.
