Guys, why doesnt the SR5 package include a diff lock. Or let me put it another way. Why would I want to buy a 4X4 without a diff lock? Thanks.

It's part of the "off road" package and most people don't even know what it is :p
Plus it's more expensive and people don't think they'd ever use it

Because an aftermarket locker (ARB) in the 8.4 rear end of the SR5 is greater than an 8.0 with an e locker

I don't go off road except to fish. So I don't need it.

But if you are not into off road, then why need a 4X4!? I guess I'm just trying to understand that if you dont plan to install an after market locker or plan to off road, why would I need a 4X4 without diff lock? A 4X4 without a locker is one option sold by Toyota. Im just trying to understand the target market. Thanks.

lockers are no good in snow for highway driving, is a good reason for regular 4x4.

There are plenty of situations that a locker wouldn't be needed and 4x4 does the trick.

Cause you will use 4HI a lot more often than 4LO with a locker

On the other hand, I have the locker and use it all the time... even if I don't "need" it per se.

All this and more plus resale value. I don't off road but I use my 4x4. As a matter of fact I used it a bunch this winter.

    all depends.

If you want a truck to build up... get the SR5 and like stated get and arb

If you want an out of the box truck thats damn good... the Off road... i have used my factory elocker a dozen or so times in the 5 months of owning the truck in 4x4 to get me through / over something that would of been a struggle in just 4x4 alone.

Also TRD off road you get atrack which is badd ass!

Thanks. Will the ARB locker, if installed after the purchase and down the road, be able to be engaged inside the vehicle?

Thanks for everyone's input. Im going to test the 4 banger this weekend, but it sounds like I would be better off with the 4X4 V6. The choice then for me is between the SR5 and the TRD Off Road, and between the two, I will probably take the Off Road. Man, Toyota is smart. They box their packages so perfectly that you always end up opening your wallet more than you expect!!!! TY guys.

I have an SR5 4x4, manual, and I don't see the need for a diff lock outside of rock crawling type activities where wheels will be off of the ground. I don't plan on putting an aftermarket locker in there, for now, since I've never been on any trails that require me to have a wheel off of the ground (and don't have any plans to). 4x4 is nice for muddy roads and slick situations. I use it off road all of the time.

I also have recovery points and straps in the event I get into situation where I'm stuck...one of you nice guys with a locker can pull me out.
