I've never owned a ford (or any domestic vehicle for that matter), so I though since I'm vehicle shopping I would have a quick look at the F-150, even though I was pretty sure it was too big for my needs. Anyway, I could write pages on my experiences there, but I thought I'd share this important info with you since it probably applies to the 4WD Tacoma as well.

The sales manager I spoke to says that unless the roads are dry, he drives his F-150 in 4WD. Why you ask? Well apparently you get better mileage in 4WD vs 2WD! Who knew? He explained that since the back of the truck is so light the rear wheels will slip in 2WD, decreasing your mileage.

Yes, trucks are light in the rear end, but if you are easy on the throttle most trucks will be able to drive on wet roads. Yes, driving in 4wd will decrease your gas mileage.

Yeah driving your truck in 4wd will ruin your drive train and decrease your mileage.

Driving all the time in 4x4, should use more fuel, under normal driving.

Maybe, he is just pulling out and trying to spin the rear wheels in 2x4.

Totally not true at all. My dad has a 2011 screw f150 with the 5.0 fuel mileage normally around town is 15.5 in 4wd it's 13. That's a 2.5 mpg loss if I did the math right.

No one ever said you had to be intelligent to be a sales manager... I have an F150 and haven't had it in 4wd yet, even with all the snow we got over the last couple months. Mileage drops a bit because of the snow and slush. The back end is light but not that light. It's heavier than the back end of the Tacoma.

Having worked for a driving school that was owned by Ford and having spent a fair amount of time at the dealerships, there are both good and bad sales staff. The good are the ones who are passionate and educated about their product. The bad are ones who know about as much as the brochure states, no more.

I'm not defending them, by any means. My own experience while shopping for my truck led me to not just one, but two Toyota sales guys who both said that the truck came with "Blisstein" shocks. Pretty simple word, that Bilstein. Unless they were talking about more of a heavenly ride :)

It is VERY RARE these days to find a sales guy who genuinely knows the product, no matter the brand.

The only one who has impressed me lately is my local Bayliner / Sea Ray boat dealer, they know their shit. They are not out to sell volume, it's not the nature of the boat business.

My experience with sales people is that they know more about dealer add-ons, extended warranties, and financing than they do about vehicle specs. I've got a couple of friends that sell for new car dealers and I found out real quick that I can't talk cars with them. Very few "car guys" in sales.

The "better mileage in 4WD" was just one "gem", I assure you there were more.

I just helped my father buy a 2014 Camry at the local Toyota dealership (Metro Toyota), and I'm really struck at how different they were; polar opposites really.

At Toyota there was no high pressure sales; if the sales guys didn't know the answer to something they would say so and then go find the answer. Even the finance manager was a delight to deal with. I was on guard the whole time for a high pressure pitch and it just never came.

I made sure to briefly check out the Tacomas while I was there, and I will definitely go back for a closer look in a month when I'm ready to buy.
