Does anyone have experienced that? I always put my air con on recycle air to avoid all the diesel and other smoke on the outside but even with the recycling
Mod I still smell the odors from outside.
Is there something I can do to fix that?

But the light on the button is always on, so I may suppose it still on Recycling mode?

I believe even with it on, you get a small percentage of fresh air. Otherwise, during a long road trip, you'll use up all the oxygen in the cab.

What might be the problem? I got another Toyota and the recycling mod is excellent because I smell nothing from the outside

Cars aren't airtight (even with all the vents closed)... so I wouldn't worry about suffocating, ha.

legally there has to be like 10-20% outside air circulation so you dont asphyxiate.

The things people complain about these days.

What happens if you have to fart when you are driving?

I just compare it to my Toyota prado which is better for air con than my Tacoma.
I don't think this is a minor complaint because you are supposed to be and breathe "inside" your car and not outside.
If that was the case I won't need air con anymore, I'll just full down my windows...

If I have to fart dude (and of course I fart) I'll put down the windows for a FEW seconds... It is not comparable with minutes or hours of following bad engines which smokes HARMFUL
    Peace

Well it certainly is unfortunate, the responses this guy got on his question. I arrived at this thread using the search function because I have come to the same conclusion: the Tacoma does a shitty job of sealing up the cabin when recirculate is selected...or so it seems (apprarently I'm not the only one who thinks so).

I have never heard of any law regarding ratios of interior/exterior air and, if there were, then I imagine my two Volkswagens would be in compliance yet...my wife's CC holds the outside air at bay quite effectively - my Taco does not.

It would be nice if the 2nd gen OG's had some DIY for getting that flapper valve to close completely. There certainly are times when you don't want what's outside to get in. In particular, my wife suffers from severe respiratory issues so to the gentleman who commented about "the things people complain out" - you are simply out of line. Its a major deal for me, she often cannot ride in my truck, and this issue may force it's sale. Sadly, no sales literature that I've ever seen specifies just how "closed" is "closed" so we are left with trial and error.
Also, whoever said the recirc goes off after a short while: that's only in heating mode on my truck. I can run recirc all day with the A/C operating.

Back on point: has anyone else noticed this and is there a remedy?

mine is pretty airtight when on recirc, in fact I can feel the pressure increase in my ears when I switch to fresh air.

to find your door gasket leaks...

    a) mix up some sugary sticky soapsuds specifically for bubbles

    http://www.babysavers.com/how-to-make-bubbles/

    b) wash the truck

    c) turn truck on and run fresh air on high, get out and close door

    d) lather up all door seals and back glass and under doors with yer special suds.
    soap that sucker up

    e) find where the giant bubbles form, there is your air gap

    f) be sure to rinse the bezeejus out of it if you used sugary soapsuds

if you can't find it, you have a plug or seal missing from under the firewall or floor

I'm the opposite, I never want it on recirculate except the first few minutes when it is very hot inside. Or when entering a noxious or dusty area that I don't want to have inside.

Keeps the carpet, fabric and AC vent odors from building up so fast with the fresh air always coming in.

Short of a gas mask, no. You do not have a sealed system. If you did you would need a pressurized cabin like in a diving bell.

I know exactly what you are talking about. My last car was a Scion xB and when the recirculate button was on, I was never bothered by exhaust fumes from other vehicles.

However, with my 2010 Tacoma, with the recirculate button on, I still get a noticeable and annoying amount of exhaust fumes from other vehicles on a regular basis. I bought my truck used and thought something wasn't working right with the A/C, but never got around to investigating it.

EVERY vehicle, regardless of manufacturer has between a 5 and 15% "fresh air" allowance. The cabin is not air tight. There are rear air ventilation baffles on every car and truck. The only way they can work is if air is allowed "in". Thus the recirculation system still allows a small percentage of fresh air into the cabin. This promotes airflow, and prevents exhaust fumes from possibly building up inside the interior, as well as prevents carbon dioxide build-up inside the cabin. When a car is filled with passengers, it is very easy to have an increased amount of carbon dioxide (The air we breath out) and this can cause lethargic reactions, as well as unconsciousness, if too concentrated. Thus the cabin of EVERY vehicle is required to have a certain amount of ventilation to prevent this. Having a totally airtight cabin is actually BAD for you.
