New to the site - great info, great comments!!! Now my problem - 2008 V-6, 105K and no supercharge. Like many other posts, has a whine coming from engine. Used stethoscope to check idlers, found tension pulley bad and replaced (note: cannot buy JUST pulley - also center bolt is LH thread - but swapping in pulley taken off new ass'y beats pulling alt & compressor to install whole new tensioner ass'y).
Got rid of PART of the whine, but main noise remains - sounds like the ol' hotrods that replaced the timing chain with timing gears!!! Seems to be less noisy when warmed up, and terribly loud when cold. Again, stethoscope does not find any other bearing noise, including alt & PS pump. Also does it worse at idle, lessens when in gear.
Saw note thread pointing harmonic balancer….how does one check that??
    Any other suggestions???

    Thanks from Kansas City!!!!

The Serp belt was replaced when I replaced the tensioner pulley. Power steering seems fine and has plenty of fluid. Does not get louder when I turn, leading me away from the PS pump.

Also, the noise is coming from the driver-side. Putting the mechanic-scope to the alt, slight noise. But when I put it on the valve cover, toward the front where the oil-fill tube is, it's significantly louder, leading me to believe it's either the timing chain or valve noise from the front of the head…..

Did you ever find/fix your problem? I have the same whine on the drivers side. Not sure if mine is one of the tensioner pulley, alternator, or A/c comressor pulley.
