Hey guys, need quick help. I'm trying to buy skid plates for my 13 taco. Ive been looking at the OEM Aluminum 1/8" Toyota Skid plate and also the Pelfreybilt 3/16" Steel Skid.

To me, the Natural answer would be the Aluminum because of weight. What do you guys think?

Reroute your exhaust and go with 3/16 steel if it's going to get used.

Ya I know pelfreybilt makes a spot to go around the stock exhaust but go take a peak under your truck. Just in front of your t case if your 4x4, you'll notice your exhaust routes under a crossmember making it the lowest point in your truck. You gain a decent amount of clearance by rerouting it and got g with a flat skid.

That was a pretty hard hit. Pretty big dent on the Skid?

ya, I got the 4X4 DCLB Sport. I'll have to check that.

Okay so no one seems to be explaining this so I got you.

There are three skid plates you can get from Pelfreybilt.

    IFS
    MID Skid
Transfer case skid < this one has two options.
    1) With a recess init because of the spot where our exhaust routes underneath the transfer case and is below the cross member.

    Option 1:

    2) Get that small section rerouted so that nothing hangs below the crossmember allowing the third skidplate to be flat.

Far left one is the third skid without the cutout.

For what it's worth. I dropped my whole truck on my Pelfreybilt skids all over Moab last year and they have some scratches and dents, but nothing major.

Edit: Routing the exhaust is easy and can be done by any muffler shop for $60-$120 max!

I have a 1/4" aluminum from Relentless. Weighs in at about 38lbs. I don't do any heavy duty rock crawling so it suits me perfectly. It all depends what you are going to use it for. Does Pelfreybuilt make aluminum skids?

If your gonna wheel your rig then go with a 3/16 or 1/4 steel skid. I have Pelfreybilt's IFS skid and its complete bolt on with stock bolts and is super tough. The Toyota Skid is mainly just for looks. But for " very light " wheeling, it's probably okay.
If your concerned about weight and don't mind waiting a while, i think All Pro is working on making all new Aluminum skids for Tacoma's. But not sure when they'll be out.

Yeah but I would probably want to see some reviews first. Although the aluminum ones would be great as long as they can withstand the same hits with no issues.

Please do not buy skid plates with bumps in them. They will do more damage then good.

If you do not want to reroute your exhaust go with bud built skids. He supplied a bar that allows you to lower the mounting and leave the skid plate flat.

Having a hump on your skid is only asking for serious issues should you catch it on something. Much better to just have the skid flat.

I will definitely route the exhaust. Seems like the only option if I want to stick with the pelfreybilt.

You know what, I'm actually really considering the all pro aluminum skids if they ever do put those out for sale.

Do it. There was a good thread I've been trying to find and link for reroute options. Everybody was posting up the way they rerouted. Must've accidentally unsubd.

Yeah man, for sure. Ill keep looking for the exhaust re Route Thread. I definitely like the stamped TRD skid plate. Looks legit.

That actually might be my new favorite. The big reason Pelfreybilt is a good choice cause all their skids connect together. Also they're local and I can pick them up and avoid shipping charges. Actually even All-Pro is super close.

Ill have to wait before I buy anything now that i Know i have to Re-Route the Exhaust if I want to buy full armor underneath.
