    Hey gang -

I'll have my new Taco in about a month or so. Quick question: are any of the lighter sockets in the cabin switched with the ignition? Or are they all on permanently?

    Thanks!

    Only on with ignition on.

There is a simple mod to keep them active when the key is off.

I thought about doing it on my truck.... I still may do it.

Yep... all of them. Like was mentioned before you can mod it to not be that way but from the factory they only work with the ignition on.

Here is one way to do it. FYI, the year doesn't matter, they're all done the same way.

No no, that's perfect. Lighter sockets have, historically, been left powered even when the ignition is off in most cars. It makes leaving accessories plugged into them somewhat dangerous as it'd kill the battery. I'd much rather they be switched!

Yeah I agree. I "personally" like them to go off when the ignition is off. I never leave my cell, GoPro camera (or charger for the batteries), or anything else that needs to be charged.

I've never been a fan of the "always on" socket (I think I might be in the minority here though ).

Actually on with the key in the accessory position, not ignition on, in case anyone wants to go OCD on technicalities.:D In any case, they're switched.

Not in my experience, the opposite has been true. All I can think of have been switched outlets.

Most American cars the lighter is always hot. Porsche, at least mine is always hot. Don't know about the Volvo, it's the wife's car.

I like the dash outlets being switched, but I also have the need for some always on outlets so while I'm in the process of wiring up a Ham radio in the center console. I'm running power directly from the battery. Then, splitting off power to the radio, two 12v outlets and later a 110 outlet coming out the back of the console. 2ga wire to the console, then split with appropriate wire inside box. When I'm done I'll post some pics.

Every car I've ever owned, including the two in my garage right now have hot lighter outlets. The two Tacomas I used to own also had them, I believe. Switched outlets are unusual, but I'm glad to see they exist!

I used to have BMWs. They had always hot power ports.

It seems to depend on where the car is manufactured/designed. Every German car I have owned has had the lighters always on. US and Japanese cars seem to trend toward having the lighter(s) only on/off.

Anyone have EASY instructions on how to just get at the sockets without tearing the truck apart. Would love to just to get behind them and hot wire one of them.
