06 4.0L with 120k miles. Bought it in the middle of last year and I have no idea whether the PO took care of her or not. The state of this throttle body doesn't give me too much hope. (Before and afters.)

Yeah, that's one I should get to fast. Cheap and easy, good return on investment methinks.

I just did it yesterday and after 100 miles this is how much oil it caught, insane considering I'm at 69k. So much oil has gone through my truck before i ever did this, now I need to crack open my throttle body and clean it after seeing yours.

Don't think I've run across mention of the "oil catch can" mod. Can anyone give me a run-down? Is that what that black shit was?

And yes, I definitely recommend cracking her open and cleaning it. It was suggested to me on my "hello everybody" post, and I put it off until now. Bad move.

A catch can removes the oil that makes it through the combustion of the engine (no engine is perfect and a little oil makes it through the seals), which then gets recirculated into the intake valve to be reburnt. This leads to engine sludge, less efficient combustion, lower MPGs and ultimately; an engine that wont last as long as an engine with an oil catch can.

Everyone from average Joe's, to people with superchargers and professional racers use them.

Does it provide any benefit besides stopping gunk from accruing in my TB and the engine itself? Better MPG, or more HP maybe? Or is this just a preventative maintenance measure?

I've had the oil catch can mod for a while now and it does pay off, a lot of dirty oil gets caught in there. i say do it its a really good mod, its cheap and easy to do.

The catch can wont prevent a dirty throttle body, it cycles in after it. But the benefits of a catch can is literally everything you want from a vehicle. Dont expect a noticeable difference but slightly better MPGs, acceleration and the engine will last longer from not receiving nearly as much sludge.

Another question. Would I have to tear down the engine and clean it to see any benefits after installing the can? I mean it won't clean it after all, just keep it from getting more dirty.

No you don't have to, just get some gum out that will clean your system and you should be good. Change the oil regularly, new filters every change or every other change and all the other basic maintenance will keep your engine running for years.
