I hate mud. In my opinion it is the most problematic thing to navigate... At least the only thing I've ever been stuck in. What are the secrets to better mud traction?

I know tires are the biggest key... Let's assume I'm running 265/75/16 duratracs which was my previous tire. How does tire pressure help in mud? What about a locker? I'm just looking for tips that have worked for everyone to add to my list. Any and all thoughts welcome!

Lower tire pressure will certainly help. Bigger contact patch.

I would not want to run in someone elses tracks keeping my pumpkins from touching the ground. Try to find a new line through it instead of letting your tires sink in lower ruts made by vehicles that previously drove through. This only would works if there's not too much water and you can see the ground.

^^^QFT, don't get sketchy and let off the accelerator or your forward momentum is going to plow more mud in front of your tires, stopping you quick.

I'm not saying have your foot buried into the accelerator, but a nice steady rpm is going to take you much further than goosing and lifting off the pedal.

Keep moving if you can - once you stop and spin you're done if it sinks to the frame. Then winch or tow is only way out

Wheel speed and momentum. Right after that, tow strap and buddy.

If your going to see a good amont of mud just get a true mud tire, duratracs are OK for lite mud but they are still an all terrain tire and they don't clean that easy at least the mud I see. Other than that like others said its about wheel speed and momentum.

Air down 20PSI or less if possible, keep moving forward. Make sure tires are A/T's or M/T's.

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
Snow chains work in mud also, I've gotten through some things in 2wd vehicles that four wheel drives were stuck.

Consistency is key when you have to cross mud. You don't want to lose speed (you'll sink in) and you don't want to gun it (you'll dig down rather than forward). Good mud tires are best however the size thing is going to depend on the depth of the mud. If there's a hard bottom to be found sometimes it helps to cut through to it. If it's deep then you want to float. Momentum and consistency.

    Mud is horrible

    Absolutely terrible.

    Despicable.

    The worst.

But if you have to, keep those wheels spinning. Keep momentum up. Crawling through mud usually doesn't work.

You guys in Alberta have the nastiest mud I've ever seen. I ran my Taco through the touchless car wash at Canadian Tire (in Eddie) almost every night, and hosed out the engine bay when I got home. Thanks for the memories!

^^ and don't get so deep you can't slam it into reverse and back out.

Best bet is you figure out what you're getting into before you get into it. Take your shoes off and see how deep the hole is. Strip down to your boxer shorts and wade in, that always feels good. :)

I kid a little bit, but simply walking into what you want to drive into tells a tale. If there are rocks around you can throw rocks into the deep spots and build yourself a roadbed . . ..

    Yep. Can't forget about chains. They're a pretty good weapon in the arsenal . . . . .
