So my new Tacoma keeps getting scratched...Like a lot. Anyways some asshole hit my bumper when it was parked and just drove off. So I went to get the damage fixed and the auto body guy was like did you already have this repainted? (it hadn't) but then he pointed out the fact that the paint was really wavy. He told me that's a sign that they had to paint over it twice.

So I was wondering if this problem happened to other people's 2014s?

Your truck might have a crappy paint job and if I were you I'd go get it checked out under warranty.

When it's wavy it usually means someone didn't block it properly so it looks kinda shitty. Look for dust nibs and orange peel. If you see anything like that it is definitely repainted.

This is an extreme example of orange peel [IMG]

so yeah I see that orange peel stuff on the bottom half of my car...but does that mean the top part is a light coat? IE why there is so much scratching

mine has it as well and when I noticed it I went and checked all the new tacomas on the lot and they have it too.. My guess is they sprayed it on thicker down on the bottom to prevent rock chips and what not..

If the scratches bug you the buff them out!! I mean look its going to scratched up you can figjht it with touch up paint and detailing, but don't worry about it! You have a warranty if it makes you feel better then get it looked at.

That stuff on the bottom is gravel guard.

The only reason I mentioned it might be respraying is because at the shop I work at we get cars from dealerships all the time that a lot bot backed into something, some one keyed, whatever and we repaint it. Then apparently it is legal for a dealership to not disclose that the car was in an accident.

More than likely it's completely normal. Like MGM said just go get it checked out for the peace of mind.

That is not orange peel. That is done by design to prevent rock chips etc...

Looks like paint not thinned enough. Too little air. Dirty gun. Paint not strained. Spatter. $200 MAACO?

    Yes
there was a paint recall on the 05' and 06's, for some reason there were a couple of colors back then where the fender flares did not appear to be the same color and had excessive orange peel. It seemed pretty obvious the base coat on the flares was different so the top coat of course came out different. Some of the non metallic colors IE: white and black are actually single stage paint which is awesome if you want to color sand your truck long after it has been painted. You can basically grab some 2000 grit wet paper, a bucket and a buffer and turn it into a show car finish if you are willing to put in the elbow grease. Last year I helped my neighbor with his white 07' that he did not take good care of so it was oxidized and stained etc and by the time we were done it was absolutely perfect with zero orange peel.

All Tacoma paint jobs suck. Ive never seen one that was good and Ive seen a ton of Taco's.

Tip to others reading this... please don't sign for your truck until you inspect it. Buying and bringing home a 25-35k truck without inspecting it is crazy.

The reason the new ones scratch so easy is everybody went to a water based clear coat. It takes a little time to fully cure but once it does it doesn't scratch nearly as easy. I cut and buffed my wheel well plastic pieces because of the orange peel if you are careful it makes a world of difference. The rest of the truck looks like glass and I have black so any orange peel really stands out. The 12 I had was that way and really pissed me off but after about two months the chips and scratches stopped happening.

No orange peel on my 2009 in Super White...However, it endlessly needs to be polished. It gets very dull, quickly.

A co worker just bought a 2014 Ford F250 and his entire truck is orange peel. Looks like shit IMO. My 2012 is smooth as glass and not scratched.

American made cars tend to have orange peel off the lot. Chevy is bad in particular from what I've seen

    Black isn't single stage.

    I've heard white is though
