Exactly. A little more acceleration than the 1964 6 cylinder Falcon station wagon my dad had. And rouighly equal to other station wagons we had with carb'd V8s.

Then V6 Camry we have will leave it in the dust, in terms of acceleration from a stop.

I feel like a 6-7 in the grand scheme of things, my old 2010 Ram w/ a Hemi felt a heck of a lot more willing to move, but it also was a lot more thirsty.

My taco is the slowest vehicle I have owned, besides my 89 3.0 pickup. It might be faster than my 1.7l Civic, but if so just barely. The 4.0 is a turd.

Mine is maybe slightly better than two new 4.3 S-10's I've owned.

    On it's own, I'd give it a 6.

    It'd be about a 2 compared to our '08 4.6 liter Toyota-built sedan.

    Things I need to tow.
In spite of it being larger and heavier, it beats the pants off the 3.4 I had in my 1st gen.

Plasti-dipped upper fenders and emblems. satin black spray paint here and there inside and out. 5100's set to 1.75" up front . C channel front bumper. Maxxis bighorn 255/85/16
6.5, i work out of 3/4 ton chevys. Gas burners 6.0all week, and id say towing upto 4-5k lbs (thats as heavy as ive towed in the taco and about what the majority of my loads are at work, i would actually give a slight edge to the taco 0-60. But past that i assume that atrocious gm piles of garbage prolly get it. 265/75/16 so 31.5" ish. 98 dodge ram with a 5.2 v8 couldnt pull me in a tug of war to boot.

Smoother power and more pull off idle to 3K would be great. The 4.0 is kind of like a lightswitch up around 3k. I know it's a V6... But I've driven N/A 4 bangers half the size with great low end that would pull hard off idle and stay alive all the way till redline. Ive also driven V8s that don't come alive till 5K… Its all in the tuning….

For a 4.0 I would say it is average. Without SC a 5 as I feel it is normal for an engine that size, nothing special. With SC perhaps a 8 but definitely not a 10, but if the SC is romped on much there is a chance of blowing the bottom end or head gaskets.

I used to drive a modded Trailblazer SS. If I'm comparing my Taco to that, it's not even close.

I'd say 7. It gets out of it's own way, passes people easily on the highway, chirps the tires if i'm doing 25 and it drops a gear.... (even with a tonneau and bed mat weighing the back end down).
It absolutely destroys my old 3.4 / 3.0 trucks. wouldn't be a fair race.

It's not like it's "bad"...it's just not great is all. I-70 isn't that bad, but it does need to downshift quite a bit. Berthoud Pass is a little more taxing (totally expected, obviously). But yeah, it's perfectly acceptable...hence my 6 rating. It just isn't powerful. I prefer the power curve of Nissan's VQ 4.0 in the Xterra/Frontier/Pathfinder, personally (a lot more low end grunt).

I would say 8.5. The biggest issue I have with the engine is the lack of low end torque. You have to wind it up to get into the good power band. If you're used to V-8's with lots of torque from idle, it's a bit frustrating. But that 4.0 is powerful enough to push our light little trucks pretty good, even with a lift and E range BFG AT's.
