I'm hoping I can get some ideas on what is causing my engine noise. I have a 2008 Tacoma Double Cab Sport. When I go above 60 mph, a noise occurs along with a very, very slight vibration. It sounds as if the engine is in too low a gear, but the rpm's are fine. It seems as if the engine is working too hard. I let off the gas and coast, and the sound immediately goes away.

    Video with sound?

What rpm is this that is "fine"?

    What conditions?
    Hot, cold, uphill, flat, downhill.....
    What grade gas?

rpm's are at 18/19 cruising at 65 mph with the noise.

I've been using 87 octane, but filled up with 91 today to see if that helps.

It's been making the noise in temperatures of 20 below to 60 above.

It makes the noise cruising on flat land.

    Interesting.......
I assume ur used to our typical "tick" sound at all speeds already?... Just an small annoying tick

Any recent changes like new tires, accidents, aftermarket "performance" air filter, or any kind of lift?

is it the typical 4.0L fluttering sound that every 4.0 has?

No add on's, it's all stock.

It almost sounds as if a small engine airplane is buzzing me as I drive down the road, but its a slight noise.

    I don't think it's the rotors.

I have absolutely no mechanical knowledge. I've done basic maintenance with the oil change, air filters, changed spark plugs(thanks to youtube videos), and greased fittings. Do I just needs a basic tune up done?

Mine kind of does this as well. I just noticed it recently. I hav 09 stock DCSB 4X4 4.0. It is near impossible to describe sounds in words on a forum but mine is a VERY faint but noticeable intermittent hum.

hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... at highway speeds. it stops whem I let off the gas.

I couldnt tell you what it is. It was never really loud enough to bother me.

But now, I am just curious.

Is this similar to what you are experiencing OP?

Are you sure the noise isn't coming from the windshield?

It sounds like you're experiencing the same as me. It's annoying enough to bother me, make me curious, and leaves me wondering if it's something that needs tended to, or just something I need to deal with.

I'm 99% sure it's not the windshield. It's coming from the front end. The engine... or something else.

Mine is kind of "rumble strip" sounding just not nearly as loud.

I will try 4 HI asap on the highway when the roads are wet. Its been a litlle while since I have used that on the highway. Usually I have the radio on and the heat blower chirping away so I may not have noticed it then.

Also, I am long overdue to swap out my front diff and t case oil. I will let you know if it goes away, maybe the stuff in there is in bad shape, its been a while. I plan on doing it this week.

Hopefully everything is ok in there...

I put into 4 high and drove at 65. Same noise occurred.

Got underneath the truck and the driver side CV Shaft seemed much more loose than the passenger side, but other threads seemed to confirm this is normal.

I checked out a lot of different threads and I'm going to start with replacing the wheel bearings first.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Mine too. When it is cold it will do a humming sound every few seconds when I am driving to work...not really sure what it could be.
