So yesterday I let my brother change my oil in exchange for him to haul around some stuff in my truck. He SCREWS UP and drains the transmission oil instead of the engine oil. So to keep this short, I raged, and he fixed replaced the engine and transmission oil under my supervision. He's older, has some vehicle maintenance experience, but hell... HOW DO YOU SCREW UP AN OIL CHANGE?

Anyways... After driving to work this morning, I've noticed that my RPM is a bit higher on the highway than it usually is. From what I can remember, I believe traveling at 60-65mph should put me around 1900-2000 RPM. Right now at 60mph, I'm right at around 2500 RPM.

In other vehicles, this may sound about right... But do any of you happen to know off the top of your head if these numbers sound correct?

    It's an '06 Taco SR5 PreRunner (Auto)

What sized wheels and tires? I can't imagine any way that your RPM could have been affected.

I feel like the transmission is stuck in 4th gear while on the highway... I tried speeding up to around 70-75, but it doesn't shift and the RPM keeps climbing.

Thanks, that's what I remember my RPM being at as well before this incident.

move the shifter into 4 then back to D.

should feel it shift to 5, then head into OD.

I also might add... I just read the HOW-TO on changing the ATF by Fortech, and we did not go through the process of checking the fluid temp. The fluid was just filled until the overflow was just dripping. Not sure how much the fluid temps will make on the vehicle.

I did this on the highway, and it seems like it's in 4th the whole time (no gear change), which made me come to my conclusion that it's not shifting gears :(

these transmissions are very specific in what fluid you use and how much. go to a dealership and have it flushed with toyota atf WS (world standard) otherwise your going to have issues like you do.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined and thinking about changing the fluid myself with the OEM ATF. After reading through the HOW-TO, I'm thinking either not enough oil was let out by the overflow, or the fluid temp is incorrect.

Plus, I'd hate to go to the dealership and pay for labor when I've been doing maintenance on all my vehicles myself. It's just this one time when I let someone else touch my truck, something just happens to go wrong

Yeah, not shifting would cause a change in RPM...........

Just found a local 20% off trans flush at the dealership... I think I'm going to save myself the hassle of doing it tonight in the dark and roll through the dealership.

    Thanks for the help guys!

Sorry to hear it man. Mine turns right at 2,100rpm @ 70mph & it's all factory.

I get the frustration man but, be gentle with your loved ones. Your bro isn't the first one to have done this (as you'll see by reading on TW) & I'm betting he didn't do it on purpose.

Best of luck & keep us posted on the fix.

X2. It's just a truck and a cheap easy fix, not worth being angry at family. It is a common mistake on these trucks to accidentally drain the tranny fluid, he's not the first one to do it.

I'm sure plenty of people have made that mistake their first couple of oil changes on their Tacos. I was only upset a short while since the truck IS my only daily driver right now, and it would just suck if the tranny was damaged. Oh well, at long as I get this problem addressed quickly, I'll be over it.

If the truck calls for WS (world standard) fluid, then it is definitely worth the effort to buy it from the dealer even if you change it yourself. My girlfriend's Corolla transmission completely seized 2 months after a bonehead mechanic put ATF in a WS tranny.

265/70/17 here. I usually hit 2100 rpms at 70mph on the highway. (V6, 4.0L Auto and I just had my tranny flushed)

Have you tried switching from D to 4 and back? Does it definitely go into 5th?

Yeah, I stopped by the dealership and got their recommended OEM ATF fluid; will probably be changing the oil sometime today or tomorrow if I can get home before the sun sets.

I tried switching from D to 4 and back, but the RPM does not budge and I don't feel the tranny shifting gears. I also noticed that when I try to shift into "L," the light on the shifter gauge doesn't light up.
