My 6 speed beeps and feels like it goes into reverse but as soon as you hit the skinny pedal it grinds then allowing you to push it all the way into gear while it's grinding. I've thought about going with a short throw shifter just for a nicer shifting pattern and in hopes of it solving my reverse problems. Any ideas?

Dont spend money on a short shifter until you figure out the grinding problem. It should shift just fine with the stock shifter.

How long have you owned the truck?
How many miles are on it?
Has the clutch disc ever been replaced?
Do you have any issues with other gears?

Check the fluid level also. May need clutch disk/flywheel/t-bearing, or have worn out synchros.

I had a shift fork bend and reverse was the gear I lost...Ended up getting a new transmission with my warranty.

I'd pull the shifter and check the nylon pivot bushing and the nylon cap on the tip of the shift lever.

If it were me I'd take off the shifter to look at and make sure everything was stock and in good condition. If no problems there I'd replace the clutch/throw out bearing and inspect the flywheel just because of how many miles are on it.

If you were to still have issues after all of this it's highly likely that something is wrong inside the transmission itself. Bearing/Synchro/Shift fork...
That's the route I would take,

Or... take it to a service center and let them diagnose it.

You got the order wrong. Clutch/TO bearing has nothing to do with it. Syncros are garbage in these transmissions. Mine does this when it's cold. If I put the clutch on the floor and shift from third to second to first, then over to reverse it will go right in. Lol. Sounds nuts but it lines up the syncros.

It could also be the rubber insulation in the shifter itself. Some have had luck drilling it out and squirting it full of epoxy to firm up the rubber. Hard to tell without sitting in your truck.

Well replaced the shifter seat, nylon bushing on the shifter ball, and tranny oil, and it's still doing it. Pretty bummed at this point, and also wondering if this is a clutch or tranny issue or both.

The 6 speeds are famous for that problem. Run Redline MT90 in the trans.

This used to happen to me in my old Civic, I wanna say if I put pressure on the shifter to go into reverse, and let the clutch out just a tiny bit, it would sync the gears and it would pop in to reverse. Might be something to try to keep from grinding it every time.

It... beeps? This *is* a manual we are talking about, isn't it?
If reverse doesn't go in, don't try forcing it and NEVER open up the throttle -- that's a surefire way to destroy stuff.

I don't think that the reverse gear is synchronized. No reason for it to be.
Make sure you are at a *complete* stop.
With the clutch FULLY pressed, try to gently press the lever into gear.
If it resists, lift up on the clutch slowly/gently until it *just starts* to grab while maintaining continuous light pressure on the lever and it should immediately pop into gear.

If this procedure doesn't work, then it means that your clutch is only partly releasing when you press it in, and therefore you need adjustment or service to the pedal, hydraulics, or the clutch itself.

Not being able to get in gear isn't what I would call a problem with the gear oil...it could mean that the shifter seat/bushing is falling apart and needs replacing, pretty common on these truck with the manual trans when they get older.

It's a cheap and easy fix using these

    https://www.marlincrawler.com/transmission/shifter-parts/heavy-duty-seats

But Redline MT90 is a great gear oil to use for smooth shifting in general, I recommend it

OP has not been around for a long time but others are likely to find this thread having the same issue. So I thought I would throw my 2cents in.

The OP says that it will not go into reverse but the beep still works. The OP also has a '05. Its likely that the reverse fork is bent just enough to allow the shift rod to trigger the reverse/backup switch but too much to allow completion of the shift. Also possible is that one of the plastic pads glued to the sides of the shift fork has worn to the point creating too much side clearance, and allowing the same. But my money is on the bent fork.

The early manuals used a cast aluminum shift fork. Way to go Toyo. Not. It would bend rather easily and known to crack or break. Same deal with the 3rd gear fork. Anyway it was later revised to steel. I've replaced it and was not exactly sure if it was a forged piece or cast. Probably cast. Anyway it is stronger.
