I know this has been discussed in various areas before, but I am exhausting all options of research before I finally commit to purchasing a rack. I am looking into different ways to carry a kayak on my 2014 Tacoma (double cab) and was wondering if anybody has any experiences good or bad I could draw from...

I have a bare roof so I'm starting from scratch. Are the base racks that clip into the door bad due to the potential of water leak? They seem like they could damage the weather stripping and cause leaks.

I know the easiest way is to chuck them in the back and tie them down but I want a more reliable method to carry them for longer trips.

    What do you use/suggestions?

I assume you're wanting a roof rack for the cab. But, I had a Thule x-sporter rack on the bed of my Ranger and it was awesome! They are a few bucks for sure but they work really well. The new ones have locking mounts to the bed as well as the height adjust. Pretty slick setup. I'm looking at building a custom rack for my Tacoma just because I have extra special needs. If that weren't the case, I'd have bought another x-sporter.

I feel your pain. I am/was in the same boat. All my boats (surfski, canoe) are at least 18' long so some span between racks is important. Roof racks close together make me nervous.... Even a rack on the 5' bed is too close IMO.
So I'm opting for a yakima a tower on the roof and one rack at the rear of the bed. Just make sure the bed rack you choose will be adjustable or level with the roof rack.
I'd love a xsporter but wow they're pricey! So I went to lowes today and they sell a similar (but not adjustable on the fly) rack. It looked decent and was on sale for $239 so I bought it. I then ordered the xk3 kit for the xsporter to attach it. I just bought it today so I don't have it on yet. I had a similar setup on my old 1st gen xcab and it worked great. If you plan on hauling short kayaks I'd install both of the bed racks and haul them that way.

Another option would be to use a rack on the roof and one of the hitch racks like the yakima dry dock or Thule goalpost.
    Good luck!

Baja Rack from bajarack.com. Bolts in under the weather stripping and holds more than double the weight that the OEM does. Easy install. I am more than satisfied. I just ratchet strap it down. That's a 12ft kayak on there btw. yvatytam_f01dae9fbb34aefa5ebcf6f649a614e6c72967cb.jpgu2a6ynat_38819dc105f1b942e7f37c5ecabd1c600615b9c9.jpg

I use one of the Thule 500 xsporter towards the rear of bed and the OEM roof racks. This setup gives you 3 bars and about 8-9 feet between xporter and OEM rack front bar.

I just ordered the Thule Xsporter yesterday because I have seen many of them around here with kayaks my size or longer (mine is about 12') and everyone I talked to hasn't had any issues. If you decide oh the Thule rack I found them here: http://www.rackwarehouse.com/thule-pick-up-truck-bicycle-bike-racks.html and it has been the cheapest I could find. I also called them and they upgraded mine to the new model that just came out for the same price.

Cool thanks for the tips and options guys, much appreciated. That baja rack looks great too, super versatile. Seems like the common theme here is the Xsporter so I'm going to look into them. Thanks for the link Chris, seems like it's exclusive to the US though

What did that cost? Is it pretty easy to install?

http://www.bajarack.com/toyota-tacoma. 610 is the price now. I installed it by myself in like 30 minutes. With a wrench, ratchet, drill, Dremel, and waterproof silicone rtv. You can download installation manual from the site.

One thing to remember about hauling longer kayak's for a long drive. Mount them properly. The heat from the sun can warp them making them worth less. They are not like a canoe.

I bought a different product from BajaRack, it's the flat rack. I bought some custom pads from my board bag maker so I can transport it uncovered.

Has the wind noise with that rack when going 60.

You can tell it's there. I don't mind. I plan on getting some off road tires when these wear out, so I'm sure everything will even out.

I came from a full sized truck and I couldn't get used to the short, narrow bed. I wish I had photos of everything I've put up there. SUPER solid at highway speeds. This is a set for the local little theatre.

No money, all went to truck...
Here in Hawaii we have plenty guys with canoes and kayaks. Most people will go with a single roof rack over the cab and then a single bed rack to get nice wide spacing.

I have thule racks spread as far apart as I can on my roof. I can carry 20 foot canoes pretty easy.

I WISH I could mount thule racks in the factory bolt holes rather than clips that anchor through door. But I have not come across that solution yet.
