Just out of curiosity did you have your current frame treated regularly for winters up your way?

Just curious why some people's frames are taking a dump and others aren't reporting issues (or as far as they know)

No, they didn't. I took it in for the brake caliper and asked them to check the frame while it was there.

FWIW I have an excellent service advisor. The last time I was there (with my wife's vehicle) I had spoken with him about the frame. He told me to bring it in and they'd check it. There was no talk of cost, but I assumed there would be no charge - a goodwill gesture.

BTW $125 sounds absolutely ridiculous. All they have to do is put it on the lift. Are there any other dealers around you?

I've only owned it for 2 years. I intended to treat it, but the more I thought about it I decided to wait because I didn't want Toyota to say something I did to the frame to be an excuse for them to refuse to do anything.

I think the defective frames came from Dana - a frame supplier to Toyota. Someone else can probably chime in though.

Wtf, a loaner based on customer loyalty. ... isnt spending assloads of money on a vehicles enough loyalty? Is the dealer saying loyalty based on repairs or maintenance done at their location? What if you dont have work done at the dealer (for numerous obvious reasons). This whole frame situation stinks.

As I mentioned I'm taking mine in for recall work. I asked about a loaner, and they asked if I had bought it there. I told them I did, and they replied "then you get a loaner" Hmmm.

My brother in law's 05 had 61k when his failed state inspection last fall due to the frame rust. Toyota did replace it for free but it took them 4 months to get the frame and almost a month to do the work. And because it didn't pass inspection it was illegal to drive it during that time. Fortunately he also has a company truck and my old 4Runner so he wasn't totally hosed.

    Sorry to hear.

I'm about 95% sure my frame was replaced by the previous owner at 75k. 92k on the truck now.

I spoke with the dealer this morning. The frame is on order, but Toyota hasn't answered whether they'll give me a loaner. Service Rep says we'll working something out either way.

The frame should be here in a month or so.

My State inspection expires this month, and I've been asked to let him know if it fails.

I got the call this AM that my frame had arrived. (I saw two on a flatbread headed north on I-95 the other day and wondered if one was mine...)

I dropped the truck of ~noon and I'm in a rental that Toyota is paying for.

I don't know, but the service rep thinks Toyota has taken over the plant where the frames are made. I can tell you that I will be on top of rust protection.

Has anyone else received a recall letter from Toyota for their 2nd gen's frame? I did two days ago. They want me to bring it in to a dealer, who will repair the problem. Not sure if "repair" will include such options as having Toyota buy the truck back (like they did the last time a frame rust recall was issued).

    Others?

I got mine a couple weeks ago. Obviously the folks who sent the letters didn't seem to know I already had a frame en route. I ignored my notice.

If the frame fails their inspection they'll replace it or apply rust protection. To my knowledge they are not buying any vehicles back - that was not an option given me - or repairing them.

Tell you this... I'll be damned sure I'm not paying for a rental car if Toyota is repairing my vehicle under what I deem is warranty or recall type work. My wife's RAV4 has been looked at by the dealer for recall items and when the work takes like 4 hrs or longer, I demand a free loaner. To date, they have always given me one.

I'm glad to hear that you're not getting hosed on this one.

If we keep getting ice storms, I bet it won't be long before we're dealing with Salt. Bad part is, it'll be years after before we start seeing shops offering undercoating services, like up north.

Thank you. I was prepared to argue, but I didn't even have to. I can see them trying to spare some expense, but I was happy not have to have the conversation.

Go to Toyota.com create an account and register your vin. I bet that gets you on a list for the recall letters.
