I used windex to clean my wheels. Let em dry. Sprayed and didn't fall off. Stayed on through multiple car washes.

To remove I scratched the rubber on the edge of the wheel and put the power sprayer at the peel. The water got under the plasti dip and peeled off in one layer.

When I first dipped them I used windex as well to clean the wheel also. Hopefully tomorrow all goes well

QFT, I didn't sand my wheels at all, nor would I, it kind of negates the appeal of Plastidip vs. paint.

How did you clean your wheels the first time?

I washed mine with Simple Green, then went back over each wheel with rag, toothbrush and a bottle of solvent (Acetone or any body shop pre paint cleaner, don't use turpentine as it's oily and leaves a residue). Let dry and spray away. I'm guessing there was some left over tire dressing or other shit on there to make it peel up like that.

I'm going over 3 years with my Plastidip and it still looks great.

    Some stuff...
Nope, I power-washed my wheels when gave them a good wipe with alcohol then sprayed them 4 times. Since then, I've power-washed them, been through the car wash including the wheel scrubber, etc and no issues - Plasti-Dip is holding up well!

So, it seems the general consensus is to do at least 3 coats and then a clear coat protectant over it or no protectant?

    Later.

Plasti Dip sticks better to smooth surfaces. I would not sand it. And honestly, you might could just spray over the existing dip to stop the peeling

The first time a cleaned with windex... I might not sand then the first time I did 3 coats of black plus 4 additional coats for metallic and gloss finish so I thought That should have been more then enough. I will make sure I do 4 thick coats and then the extra finish on top. Has any one else used a plasti dip metalizer before? I was thinking maybe you shouldn't gloss over it? But I also don't see how that would hurt it either.

I would wash and scrub the lip really really good with simple green and also wash the tire as well. Then drive it around the block to help get the water out of all the crevices and maybe the wheel with some air to make sure its completely
dry. Dip will peel if there is any kind of moisture under it so making sure it's dry is key. Just before you go to dip wipe the wheel with alcohol and a micro fiber but don't spray the alcohol on the wheel just wet the micro fiber and wipe.
To help get a nice smooth finish heat the cans of dip up I put mine in a bucket of hot water it will make a big difference. Prep is key!
4 to 5 coats of dip for peel ability and durability.
Hope it works out this time around.

The index card method works great too. No need to sand anything too.

Why not just powder coat the wheels? It will look a thousand times better and last a thousand times longer.

I don't get the whole plasti dip fad, I can see doing the emblems but that's about it..

The plasti dip fad reminds me of the chrome in a rattle can fad back in the day.

Yea it's not for everybody. I dipped my Solara a few months back and it totally transformed it from a ho hum 150,000 mile car to a new car.... for me at least, and for 300.00 you really can't beat it IMO.

Most tire shines are silicone based and cause all sorts of issue for any sort of paint or top coat. That is why there are not allowed in any body shop. Any thing silicone based is barred from them. That is the reason water based products were invented.

Clean the wheel and then clean it again. Windex is not strong enough to clean silicone deposits.

Man, there are a lot of good ideas here, I might have to give this another try. Sounds like i gave up too early. Solvent, thick, plus watching the over spray on the tires makes a lot of sense. We would do the same as OP and just let it fall off... probably our issue also.

What Jonkassidy said and the fact that if you dont like it, or turns our the color just doesn't look how you want it you can change it. Its mainly for the body color of a car, and hell, why not hit the wheels while you are at it? Its a blast to dip a car, have one color for a few months, get bored and change it relatively cheap.

Not wheels but I put 10 coats on my emblems. Took most of the day but have had no issues with peeling at all. Wait 20 mins between coats and on the last coat wait about 10 mins to remove. The more coats the better your chances has been my experience.

I got quoted about $140/wheel for powder coating. New black wheels would have been over $100 per wheel. Plasti Dipping my wheels cost me under $30. There's your answer

That truck is filthy. Wash it once in a while.. and do the undercarriage too.

    j/k :)

I'm amazed as to how clean your undercarriage is. You're a sick man! ;)
