I have 110,000 miles on my 2006, original pads/shoes on the rear drums. I hear a squeaking sometimes from what sounds like the right rear when I take off and it goes away when I get up to speed, or if I apply my brakes. Not sure if it's the brakes, wheel bearing, u-joints, carrier bearing or what. Just wondering how long the rear brakes usually go. I need to take it in and have it checked I guess. I had the rear u-joint replaced not too long ago, it was squeaking really bad only when in reverse, weird, but that is what fixed it.

I traded my truck in at a little over 100k miles with the original drum and shoes. I inspected them around 95k miles and they still had a LOT of life left in them. FWIW, I replaced the rotors and pads up front at 70k miles.

150k on the mile for new shoes. Drums had enough life to turn them.

I have 166k on my original rear brakes. At last inspection they still looked good. I've replaced the front pads twice.

What might my squeaking be coming from, It goes like this. Squeak, Squeak, Squeak, the faster I go the faster it goes until I'm doing about 15 to 20 and it goes away. Does a wheel bearing do that or is the damn u-joints again.

Yank the drum(s) off and take a look. Maybe just glaze on the shoes? Broken spring rubbing the drum?

After driving for a bit, stop and see if the drums are hot. That would tell you if the shoes are dragging. Wheel bearings can make noise on their way out also though... Grease up the u-joints well and see if that does anything to make the noise go away or change at least to start eliminating possibilities. I also agree with above, yank the drum off and have a look. At the least, just blow everything out with brake cleaner and maybe give the drums and shoes a light hand sanding.

200k on mine. I haven't looked at them in a while, but I haven't had any problems out of them yet.

I'd say it really depends on your driving style though. I drive 120 miles round trip to work & often, I never have to stop. Just interstate and about 3 stop lights for me. I'm easy on the brake & throttle so mine should be in great shape at 76,000 miles. Hell, my OEM tires still have good tread life.

I'd take the drums off and have a look. A u joint might also have play in it if it's going bad.

I think I had 70000+ miles when I had them replaced and they needed it.

110K on my '06 rear drums before replacement... BTW, they are about $110 EACH!!! Oh, and the balancing weight both fell off around 45K.

Be concerned about your Ebrake cables if you're in salt county... $400 replacement at the dealer and they merge inside the front console.

Squeaky rear brakes are common, cleaning them with brake cleaner and breaking the glaze with a little sand paper usually fixes that.

+1 on U joints, that's a common symptom, they will also be quiet if its raining since the water will lubricate the lack of needle bearings left. I suggest that you check them. If its a front and you lose it you will be pole vaulted when it drops, if its a rear it will fall out and your drive shaft will end up on the road.

140K on mine, look just fine. The back brakes aren't used much (little pressure when applied) so may last 200K. The noise you hear can be just about anything. Maybe some dust or moisture in the drum, very common.

mnrenn - curious what ended up being the cause of your squeaking. I am going through exactly what you describe above. A friend and I were putzing around last night try to figure out the cause. Pretty sure it is coming from the brakes. Just picked up the rear shoes from toyota ($110!) and going to dig into the drum brakes sometime this week.

I got about 90,000 miles out of mine. They were really expensive to replace though. ;)

This question should be relative to your E-brake usage. Rear drums are for the E-brakes right? I've never used the emergency brakes in my truck, so they should be good for life?
