is it possible to upgrade the stock speakers while retaining the steering wheel controls etc. the stock speakers (non jbl version) are junk as we know it. is it possible to upgrade them and possibly put them on an amp andadd a sub? I want to upgrade but don't want to lose functions from stock controls like the steering wheel.

As long as you aren't changing the stereo, you are fine. Speakers won't affect the steering wheel controls. If you are going to replace it, you can buy a Steering Wheel Control Interface that will allow them to work with the new stereo.

I am about to go through this.

I think you should be able to without any problem.

I pick up my 2014 DCSB TRD OR on Friday and will be replacing the Entune Audio Plus deck with a Pioneer AVIC-4000nex, all the speakers and adding a sub. So I am going to have to get the Interface so the controls will work for me.

I know about stereos but what I want to do is beyond my level. guess ill have to save some $$ and go to a stereo shop and talk to them. do you know of any instructions on how to do it yourself? and isn't that a waste to get the truck with the entune then junk the whole system?

Been wondering this aswell...I love the head unit ,just hate the speakers but from what I heard changing the speakers won't make much difference because it all comes down to the headunit, is this right ?

I upgraded my speakers and added a amp to my factory head unit. It is a immense upgrade over the stock POS lol.
The amp I used is a clarion xtc 1410 which fits nicely above the head unit.
Speakers are energy enc650v2. All said and done the upgrade cost me 250 Canadian!

Just got a '14 (my first Tacoma) a couple of months ago, and have the Entune without JBL. Found a really good audio guy locally, and here's what he hooked me up with:

    JL XD 700.5 AMP
    JL C5-650 Component (up front)
    JL C2-650X (rear)
    JL CP-108 (Sub)

Sub drops in behind drivers side rear seat.

Out the door, installed for $1500. There were too many choices, and for me this set up sounds really nice.

    Hope this helps!

We're you able to keep the steering wheel controls and voice recognition after upgrading that? I am also starting to realize upgrading just the speakers will sound better but not sure if the stock hud can power them properly. I will need to take it to a audio guy

Yeah, factory head unit, so everything works as intended. It seemed to take a few days for the speakers to "break in", but the way it sounds now, I couldn't be happier.

I did Kicker 6.5" CS's in the rear and Kicker 6x9" CS's in the front with a Kicker 300.4 amp, also some sound deadening is Highly suggested IMO. All functions work like stock(head unit, wheel controls, etc).

I have had by 2014 TRD Offroad 4x4 for about six months, I would also like to do some upgrades (speakers and maybe an amp) and keep the Entune HU.

Not sure how much they charge for install. Cost really depends on what amp/speakers you pick

Do you mean a Clarion XC1410? I see it puts out 50watts per channel and is remarkably small. Is your volume and clarity good at a upper level along with decent bass from your speaker upgrade?
