The 6 speed manual is a crappy trans, and gets terrible mileage OP. Add to that a 4x4 v6 and I think you're getting decent mpg

I run 265/75-16 duratracs on mine. My odometer does not match actual mileage. For every mile driven it shows around 7/8 of a mile driven.

I have driven well over a couple million miles 95% of that with a stick I still drive a stick. The 6 spd. Taco trans is as good as any better than some. I have no problem averaging 20MPG every so often I can hit the 22 MPG mark. The biggest improvement in mileage starts with the right foot. I'm sorry you never figured out how to drive a stick and don't know where you got the 0-60 ideal one shift and I'm there.

Hwy/City MPG on the 6 speed is lower than the auto. This is fact, and even backed by Toyota's EPA estimates.

Also, the 6 speed has a lower 0-60 than the auto, again backed by Toyota.

I drive at 60-65mph on the highway and cant get over 17mpg. This will not vary by driver, cruising at one speed is the same no matter who drives, the only variable is the terrain (hills) we drive over.

I don't need to brag over the internet that I can drive standard, which I can.

Check out fuelly.com if you don't beleive me.

Look up Tacoma and look down the list at manual vs automatic.

Manuals are 15-18mpg consistently for an unmodded truck.

    Automatics are 17-20 mpg consistently

Look down the list, there is only 1 6speed over 19mpg. Plenty of automatics above that.

When new my truck was only off .1 mile for 100 driven, error increased as tires wore. Many have stated that 265/75-16 got their speedometer right on the money. My opinion is that the size change introduced some odometer error.

I measure/recalibrate my ScanGauge by distance every 10,000 miles, 50 mile trip. To get accurate mileage, you need accurate data. My speedometer (truck) is still off 2 mph, but I can live with that.

Im not looking for 35mpg but Im pretty sure the truck is advertised as getting better than 14-15mpg. Just wanting to know if there were some tips to maximize fuel economy.

The difference is so slight with the 0-60 I'm not even going there and I'm not even sure I can't beat that. Yes the automatic does slightly better better on fuel because it is part of the engine management and you don't have to lift your foot when it shifts. Can you tow in O/D? I can in 6th. I get 20 MPG pretty much every time I fill it provided it's above zero I can decide when to shift your stuck with what ever the trans wants to do and if you manually shift you may as well have bought the stick. Saying the stick is sh$% is foolish there is nothing wrong with that transmission and there is nothing magical with mine if it's driven properly you can get 20 MPG even with the worthless 6 spd.

This! I agree these trucks unmodified don't even get 20mpg (average) on the freeway on a trip with no wind I could see it. If people are getting 20mpg with a v6 taco I am not sure their calculating correctly or they drive all freeway miles. I have a 3" lift and run 33's and combined I am getting about 15-16mpg.

20 mpg can be done in the auto. My first trip I took in my truck I was getting about 21 mpg. This was adjusted for my duratracs which are about 1" larger in diameter than stock.

When I had the 6 speed I would only average around 16-17 mpg with the same tires.

21+ mpg is definitely possible for the V6 when in stock form pared with the auto at 60% highway driving, easy.

I can't think a beneficial reason to buy the manual with most modern trucks unless we're talking about the manual transmission to pull heavier loads than the auto equivalent.

First beneficial reason that comes to mind is I love a manual transmission. Second is, even with the difference in top gear between the manual (.85) and the auto (.79), I can regularly get 22 mpg in the summer at 65-68 mph. Summer on city streets average 20mpg. All mpg have been consistent over 45,000 miles with an accurately calibrated ScanGauge.
