Is 2.7L a mistake?

    My current 2006 Tacoma is a 2wd 6 cylinder. I really want a 4wd, just found a good deal on a 2013 but it has the 2.7L 4 cylinder?

Can you increase the performance specifically the throttle feel or pick up of an automatic 4 cylinder?

I though my 6 cylinder manual 6 speed was already slow off the line?

Should I stay clean of the 2.7L? Is there a big performance difference? I do not tow anything heavy?

    Thanks...

Do not purchase a 2.7L and think it will have the grunt of the 4.0L. The performance difference is definitely large enough to notice.

You can increase the performance but unless you plan on dropping a significant amount of money, it will never become a 4.0L.

If you can afford the V6, get it. I don't think anyone has ever said "Man, I should have got the smaller engine."

If you find the 4.0 slow don't get the 2.7, it's nearly 100hp less than the 4.0.

I love mine, but I have a reg cab and don't try to go fast haha

Are we speaking trucks, specifically? Because V6's can be damn exciting.

    Just sayin'.

It's the nature of the beast after coming from a full size to a tacoma I wanted the 4 cylinder .Simple motor and good gas mileage. To all the people that say don't buy a truck for gas mileage guess what I did haha and no I don't regret it. 23 mpg compared to 13 mpg the fuel savings a year is almost 4 months of payments. I didn't buy a truck for going fast. Just my 2 cents

Thanks Everyone for the advise... I'm still on the fence... I'm not looking for a racecar but I also don't want to be bummed when I step on the gas... and It's a really good deal...

Just get the v6, you can still manage 20mpg if you're lucky. No sense in beating yourself over it.

Get a 4x4 v6 and call it a day! You don't regret the v6 unless you are looking specifically for fuel economy.

I did test drive it and besides when going up a decent hill, it felt alright.

Without getting crazy, maybe cold intake and exhaust upgrade, can you feel a noticeable difference in the response?

I know it's not going to turn into a 4.0L but can you add a half a set of balls to it?

If you are complaining about the v6 just run away. I am happy with it because I have a regular cab. I have always wanted a regular cab so the trade off for speed was fine by me. It is a capable engine and you can push it. Look at n0rths build if you don't believe me. Just don't get it in hopes of speed or glorious mpg numbers.

No you can't. Short of a $4500 turbo, nothing will make it close to being fast. Noisier maybe, but not faster.

    Working on it now....UNDER CONSTRUCTION
I have a 2003 Tacoma with the 2.7 and a 2014 with the 4.0 engine. So far the 2.7 is a little snappier in comparison to the 4.0. I never towed with the 2003 or the 2014 so I can't comment on that. My 2008 Tundra is used for the towing and is the designated vehicle for that.

I did the same move as you intended. You will miss the power but the gas does improve. For me, I drive 70 miles a day- a 75 dollar fill up every 3 to 4 days is a little lame, now it goes to 5 days!!, I had a prerunner but once I got into off road, I know I was limited. 4x4 is the shit with off roading (duhh). I feel manual transmission is the way to go. Sure, driving through traffic sucks but from what I gathered, the 4 cylinder transmission is a little bit more durable - clutch wise with the throw out bearing design. The feeling of using a manual is very direct and clutch star kill will save your ass on a trail.

Just my .02 cents plus it reminds me of the 93 wrangler, 4 speed manual I drove way back when....

Btw, I also carry 800-1000 lbs cargo daily and yes, it bogs- but not as much as you would think...

OP check out this thread in the 4 cylinder forum
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/4-cylinder/324360-just-got-my-lce-header.html

With an LCE header and intake spacer you can add close to 20 hp and 30 ft lbs of torque while moving the peak power output down below 3000 rpm's. That's a difference you could feel and use. It still won't be a 4.0 though, and if you thought the 6sp 4.0 was slow this will definitely feel slow.
