So I bought my '12 access cab TRD prerunner new a couple years ago and deeply regret not going with the 4x4. After about a week of negotiating, I've been offered a DCLB TRD sport 4x4 for my trade plus $9k. I told them I still need to think about it. I would have to have a payment again if I do this. What do you guys think? Should I do it?

Edit: my existing truck has 38,000 miles on it, and I would be getting a brand new truck.

Whenever I see this kind of post I think what would I do? I would take those 9K and buy a used tacoma or 4Runner that way you have two and if something breaks in one then you still have the other.

Think about it because if you plan on wheeling even a little then you'll scratch up the paint on your brand new body. Just saying I know I wouldn't want to and thats why i'd buy something I wouldn't have to worry about too much?

Not enough information here. Is the truck your being offered new and if not how many miles and what year? How many miles are on your current truck, and what kind of rate are you getting on the loan?

I think it comes down to this. Do you really need the double cab and the 4X4. How many times have you said , "Damn it I wish I had the DC 4X4". If it is only a few times, then maybe stick with what you have.

Also, car payments suck man, but if it gets you into the truck you want, and you will stop you from kicking yourself, then trade it.

What is the difference in price between a new access cab trd prerunner and dclb trd 4X4? 9K seems like a decent deal to me, doesnt look like they are running you over on the trade.

If both trucks were the same year and mileage, then your getting a 6k factory upgrade:

    1) The difference between Access Cab and Double cab in my area is 3k.
    2) The difference between Prerunner and 4wd in my area is 3k.

This is what I was driving at too. So net net, dealer is making 3K.

Seems like a decent deal if the truck he's being offered is as new or newer and has the same or fewer miles than his current truck. He didn't say what year or mileage the new truck has, so it's impossible to know what kind of deal it is.

He could be getting offered a truck that's 3 years older with 40k more miles than his current one for all we know.

I got a prerunner and endend up wanting a 4x4 again it was cheaper and made more sense to just by a 2nd rig just for camping off reading went with a 94 bronco.. Have a spare for me or the wife if we have a issue with our dailys and I have a taco and a bronco to mod ;)

Take this when I know there won't be anything crazy and for more desert like off reading
    [IMG]
And this guy is for camping trips (we use the back as living quarters) and trail runs or bad weather and muddy days..

As others have said I would probably try to grab an older 4x4 for that 9k.
If you really need the space of the DC for your DD then it might be a better option though.

No one knows your exact situation better than you though.

Thanks for all the advice. My '12 has 38k miles, and the deal is for a brand new truck. I've done the 2nd car thing for a few years in the past and didn't really like it (more maintenance and people try to borrow one). The loan would be paid off in about six months, so that's not a big deal there.
All signs point to go for it, but $9k is still a chunk of change.

I picked up a trail rig for less than 2K so now i've got a reliable DD and another money pit.. It works well for me.

Oh yea, and I work in construction, so 4x4 would be nice to have on my DD but not absolutely critical. And scratches from off road and working use is just part of having a truck IMO. I never get too freaked out about them.

About the scratches, some people don't care much about them while others freak out insanely.

Well.... Decided to go for it, but the dealer started playing games. They ended up re-negg'ing on the deal and then tried to sell me another prerunner. I thanked him for wasting my time and was on my way. Anyway, thanks for the advice you all gave.

Sorry to hear they backed out on the deal. That sucks. I hate shitty dealerships.

Update. The general manager called me today, and agreed to the original deal. I hate the game, but I think this is a pretty good deal. I gave them a deposit, and they ordered it!

Old truck: '12 access cab, TRD off-road, prerunner with 38,000 miles, MGM
New truck: '14 DCLB, TRD sport, 4x4, with no miles, white

I'll put up picks went I pick it up.
