Question for those running oil catch cans...

If you're running an oil catch can on your 4.0 V6 and get little to no accumulation in it between oil changes, I'd be interested in your answers to these questions:

1. Are your driving and load demands "light", "average" or "severe service"?
2. What viscosity oil do you use? (Don't care if natural or synthetic).

The reason I ask is I've had a tank installed for over two oil change cycles now and aside from a light film on the inside of the tank, there has been no accumulation of oil (or anything else) at all. My usage is average with some towing and I use 5W-40 oil (in my case, Shell Rotella-T Synthetic).

I have had this experience, and in my case something was wrong with the way I installed it. I redid my hoses and now it accumulates just fine. I believe there is merit to installing the catch can lower than the PCV valve. My can is now down near the bumper. My can catches about 3oz of oil every 6 months / 5K miles.

To answer your questions :

1. average driving city / highway
2. 5-30 weight syn.

 

I have a brand new 14I out the catch can on and already have caught about 3oz I would guess. Just under four thousand miles still. Standard oil that comes from factory and average use.

 

I had only a little accumulation in mine until I added some stainless steel scrubby into the little baffle area in my Oil Catch can. Then this is what I had after 167 miles.



And
1. Normal/lite driving no hauling
2. Mobil1 5W-30 Synthetic

 

lots of city driving, 30% hwy

mobil 1 5w30. i get a good amount of accumulation between oil changes.
