Too late to comment but I used the same method:

    Clean the letters and area
    Mask around the letters
    Pasti-dip 3-4 coats
Peel away the excess and used a toothpick to remove the excess in hard to reach areas

I would just take them off and leave them off. ;)

How does someone remove the excess paint? I've never used Plasti Dip before and obviously have not worked with it.

I'd like to do the 'leave badges on' method as it seems removing the overspray is quite easy. Yes, I understand to tape around as to not get paint on the paint of the truck. I see some are quite generous in the amount of 'space' they leave around the badge. Is it better to leave some material to work with or get as close to the edge as possible when taping?

Doing the badges on the truck:
I learned as I went. There's a "window of time" where cleanup around the badge with a toothpick is fairly easy.
Do it too soon and you'll just smear it around. Wait too long, and you may peel it off the badge and have to do it again or touch up.
For me, at my temp and humidity, it seemed like about a half hour was good to peel the masking tape off and clean up.

As to overspray; it wipes off real easy with prep-sol. You want to wipe everything down before hand with that, and then with a tack-cloth to get any remaining dust and such off.

If you don't like the results, as long as you don't let it set all the way up, you can spray it with the prep-sol, wipe it off, and try again.

This is how much I left around each badge.

The way that I did it was spray everything down with Windex and wipe it off and let it dry.

I then used 10 coats of Plasti Dip on the badges and the paint of the truck with a 20 min drying time in between sprays. Between coats turn the can upside down and spray to clear out the paint otherwise it will splatter on your next spray and give you a texture you don't want.

On the last coat I let it dry for 10 mins and then took the dull end of a sewing needle and peeled away at the corner of the tape. It comes right off the paint but sticks to the emblem perfectly.

Since I put so many coats on this project took most of a day but the results turned out perfect and you can't tell they aren't factory.

You don't need to remove the badges to PD them. Clean them with DYC Pre Dip Spray or 50/50 of rubbing alcohol with water. Make sure that it's dry. If you don't and you spray it with the dip them the dip is going to lift and not cure to the emblem. After you do your last coat wait a minute or two and then peel the tape. You do not need to wait 10, 20 minutes on the last coat. If you do and pull the tape, the tape could pull up the dip as well. Use a tooth pick to when it comes to getting the dip off. Using metal could scratch your paint if you're not careful. I did mine last year and they are still holding up. I think I am going to redo them this summer since they've been there for almost a year and a half. It's an easy process. Very simple mod.

Nice to know you can always go back to original.

What about in-between the letters themselves? Do you mask them too or just clean it out before it dries?

Let it partially set up-30 minutes or so-and pick it out with a toothpick

You don't have to mask in between the letters. You can do like the OP did, that's how I did mine as well.

You do not have to wait 30 minutes to take the dip off. If you wait a couple of minutes then you can pick the dip out of the inside of the letters with a tooth pick. Again, if you wait too long to take the dip off you're more than likely to take other dip off then what you want.

    I think we agree.
I've only done this once, on my current truck; so, I'm no expert.

5-10 minutes was too soon. I don't know what was too long, but I did wait too long on one and had to do it over.

Your conditions on where you are dipping matters too. If you're dipping outside and it's 25C outside then you're dip is going to dry fast. Just as fast if you're dipping in direct sunlight. The emblems I did in March 2013 and you can tell that there was still snow on the ground. I did 20 minutes of drying time in between coats and 5 minutes on the last coat(since it was cold out) so I could get the dip between the emblems with a toothpick. I'm going to redo them this year, maybe even a different color. Leaving a space between the emblem and the tape when you pull the tape it will leave some dip around so you can pull with your finger or toothpick. The good thing about that is you can touch it and see if the dip is still sticky or dry enough to pull without pulling it from the project.

I did 6 coats of black and used aftermarket DYC nozzles. For a first time doing it on a vehicle, they turned out amazing.

Did the front emblem. Good practice for the sides. How's my technique?
