I agree with this guy ^^. I had an '86 Toyota pickup with a solid front axle. Loved that truck.

On a side note, I just saw your avatar. My niece just made the cheer squad at Oregon.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Yeah, there was no way to reason with Toyota. I never understood that. 2001 frames fit in 1999 truck fine because people swapped them before recall. All they had to do was put 2001 frame under 1999 truck and would have cost them less than buying 1999 truck at 1.5 value.
Unfortunately, nobody (dealer, Toyota rep, Toyota corporate) would even listen to request.
    True shame....
Now expecting a frame recall on my 2gen truck  De Javu
I like Toyota but I am starting to get tired of that...

Resale is high, sell, buy something else.
    Everyone says;
If they change this I wont but.
If they don't change this I'm not going to buy.

Do research, drive truck in question, didn't like it? WTF did you buy it for?

hes just mad that none of the other manufactures make a truck that will last 200k without any major issues.

Having looked at used 1st gens 4x4's for a long while... i am glad i got the 2nd gen... and i have driven our prerunner 04 for quite some time. But the little bit bigger and creature comforts are so worth it.

My 2nd gen is a LOT quieter on the highway than my 1st gen was, not to mention it has a lot more get up and go. It's not as rugged of an off-roader, but it's better suited for the day-to-day stuff. Better seats for sure, and no annoying dash rattle.
The only reason the mud flaps on my '99 didn't fall off was because I tore them all off. Accidentally, in reverse. Probably only a matter of time before the flaps on my 2nd Gen suffer the same fate.
I feel better letting the GF borrow my 2nd gen, especially during inclement weather. The traction control, improved airbag systems, and 5-star safety rating is a big plus for her safety compared to the bare-bones simplicity of my 1st Gen.

I feel nostalgic for my 1st Gen from time to time (usually when I'm trying to fit my 2nd Gen someplace tight without scratching the paint), but in overall terms my opinion is that the 2nd Gen is a better vehicle.

    Yeah...

I know. The engine must be screaming dragging this thing down road.

I've owned 2 First Gens and 2 Second Gens. Both are awesome trucks...felt better wheeling in the first gen though.

I had a 1986 4x4 for 17 years..Mine did not have a solid front axel.1985 was the last year for that. The frame rotted out on that truck also.

    Haha!
I was on the highway once and one of those pulled out to pass a slow car. He sat in the fast lane for probably 45 seconds without gaining any ground before he tucked back into the travel lane.

I always tell people tacoma's are SUVs that look like a truck. They aren't so rugged from the factory as many will think, but they have promise with aftermarket parts galore. They're light, can't haul worth a bone, suck gas, but provide a comfortable ride for those who want to load up a few bikes, camping gear, a canoe or yak. I like mine over a Subaru forester or nissan pathfinder.

    Exactly.

I think a lot of you people are misunderstanding my post here. I do in fact love the truck. It just doesn't feel as solid as my '04. I won't be selling it to buy anything else because I don't like anything else. The Frontier was nice but not nice enough. The F150 is too damn big and the bed sides are as high as my nose- literally (and I'm 5'-10", not like I am a midget). I'm not buying an older Ranger, or a Colorado. And a Ridgeline? Please. This truck is the best that is available, I did test drive it, it's just after 30k miles I do not feel like it's as rugged or solid as my '04. I do not see this truck going 230k miles with nothing more than fluids, filters, brakes and tires. I am not kidding, I did NOTHING else to that truck- original transmission fluid! And I towed all year round!! Original spark plugs! But I do still see this frame rotting out in 10 years. And that is a bummer.

That just sounds like real bad maintaince. Please change you plugs and fluids this time. There's people on here that already have 3-400,000 miles on their 2nd gen. So they do last

I don't understand why everybody wants the 4wd switch to be lit. There are only three positions for it. Even my Jeep that had the lever didn't have lights for it.

A few early 86's did have a solid front axle. My dad bought it new when I was a kid and he gave it to me when I turned 18 and I drove it for 12 years. I beat the crap out of that truck but stayed up on the maintenance and it never let me down.
