I sold my 08 last year for good $$ & just got back into the fold with a 2014. Seats are more comfortable, rides a little nicer & I like the new entune stuff (bluetooth, etc) & steering wheel controls.

I considered waiting for the inevitable refresh (who knows when), but I like them just as they are. Power heated seats, etc., etc...that's for my Accord. My truck is....a truck.

So I figured why wait? The same thing for another 6-8 years is fine with me. I'm back in the saddle & getting 23mpg with a 2.7 4wd...

    This.

My best tank on my Silverado with the 6.0 in it was 17mpg doing 65mph on the interstate with no wind. That engine had active fuel management which shuts down 4 cylinders to supposedly save gas. An average interstate trip yielded 13-15 mpg depending on wind cruising at 70mph. Throw in some city driving on that tank and it would drop down to a solid 12-13.

Then combine that with an AFM lifter failing and wiping out the cam shaft(Happened to me, $3k later it was fixed and traded off). Never mind the Silverado's awful wheel bearings, creaky windows, rattling doors, rattling dash, lack of a cabin air filter and I can go on and on. Pretty great deal on a truck that cost $40k new.

The only fullsize v8 people I know that get "awesome" mileage are driving 2wd trucks with the small v8's and pretending to be hyper milers. They'll see 15-20 pretty easy with their more modern 6 speed automatics. Of course a fully loaded 4x4 Tacoma 5 speed auto will get comparable mileage with a lot less effort. I'm curious if Toyota were to put a 6 speed auto in their trucks if it would improve fuel economy. My guess is it probably would.

Tacomas are so good they don't need to redesign them every couple of years to make us think they're better.

x2, we don't NEED one, it would just be nice! If the Tacomas NEVER redesigned I would probably still be driving them (unless of course the competition got crazy and rendered a truck of this age obsolete, which I don't foresee)

Another option would be to take some of that cash you got in the sale, and say drop $10k on a 1st gen 4x4 already modded for bad-assery. Beat the shit out of it (responsibly) and save the extra $5k for a down payment on that future truck you've been waiting for. Hell, invest it and by the time Toyota does a 3rd gen you'll have enough dividends and growth to buy the vehicle outright.
