Hi all, first post! I am gonna buy my first taco very soon here, and just test drove my first one yesterday. 2005 double cab long box 4X4, White, auto tranny v6. beautiful truck.

One of the first things i noticed is how loud the engine was in this thing!!! There isnt anything wrong with it, and it's all stock, but you can hear the engine plain as day it seems when driving it. When i got back into my v6 ford ranger, i was happy to barely be able to hear my engine compared to driving the taco.

My question is, is this normal? It just makes me feel like i am not driving a real nice vehicle when there is so much engine noise. pretty much any other truck is much quieter.

Lastly, anything else i should be concerned about with this truck? Shes got real high miles, 217k, but is very clean and runs and drives perfect with no leaks. Thanks in advance

The Tacoma engines are noisy! Its one thing I love about them. If you don't want to hear it turn up the stereo.

That's what I'm talking about! I really like turning it on and hearing the sound of the engine! Its a beastly sound that no other v6 has.

Seems like the cooling fan is making most of the noise. Anyone put in a electric one and remove the mechanical? Might give another MPG as well.

Welcome to the world of aluminum engines. They transmit noise very well.

The 2nd Gen Tacoma cab is pretty loud. I was surprised when I drove a 2005 1st Gen Tundra how quiet it was with the 4.7l. Same Access Cab configuration as my 2012, same length, same width, same frame, same brakes, same a lot of things, in fact I think the 2nd Gen Tacoma was based pretty much on the 1st Gen Tundra. How they couldn't get the 2nd Gen Tacoma to match the 1st Gen Tundra is beyond my comprehension.

The rear seat on the 2005 Tundra with the Access Cab is worlds better than the 2nd Gen Taco Access Cab, leather, 60/40 split folding, much more comfortable. Has padding, jeez who woulda thunk? It amazes me they cheaped out so much on the 2nd Gen Taco. 1st Gen Tundra has voltmeter, oil pressure gauge, power rear slider, power rear vertical up/down on the double cab.

Sorry for the rant, but criminy, why couldn't Toyota make the 2nd Gen Tacoma like the 1st Gen Tundra? They're basically the same truck in many ways but when Toyota went to the 2nd Gen Tundra they cheaped out on making the 2nd Gen Tacoma to match the 1st Gen Tundra. They've had eight years since then to get the Tacoma up to grade like the 1st Gen Tundra but have done nothing.

Sorry again for the rant, but I'm pissed off at myself and venting for not getting a 2005 Tundra in the first place when I wanted to upgrade from the '97 Tacoma . . . . .

The cooling fan is one of the main culprit for the noises during start up and normal driving. From the guys I know that has removed the mechanical fan for a electric, most of them say it is like putting on LT headers. A lot of power is reclaimed from this parasite drag of a cooling fan. That's one of my mods down the road when the warranty expires

Here's a link for the electric fan: http://www.lceperformance.com/Electric-Fan-Kit-2TR-1GR-05-10-Tacoma-FJ-Cruiser-p/1092099.htm

I honestly think it's just toyotas V6. My sister had a 4th gen 4runner (same motor) correct me if I'm wrong. But her was way louder than my tacos for some reason.

Actually the V6 Tacoma is quiet compared to other trucks, assuming you don't get the cat back exhaust.

True fact. US Special Forces uses US sourced Tacomas in their opperations abroad. They have special permission for this, largely due to how quiet they are.

Toyota vehicles are noisy, period. I commute with my wife's 2006 Corolla and the road noise is insane. Oh-well, it is tolerable and it is tough to beat Toyota reliability.

Good point. I was thinking of engine noise as heard from a bystander outside the vehicle.

Yes the cabin road noise is aweful.

I added Dynamat lining inside all my doors and it really made a huge difference.
