Question running boards

Does anybody have any feedback on the use of running boards that fit flush to the body vs tubular step bars?

Toyota sells a set that is a few millimeters from touching the body. The problem with running boards is that it will trap salt between the gaps if you are in snow country. This is not the case with nerf bars. If you are adventurous, you can modify the mounts to eliminate the space. A tight fit may be detrimental to your rocker panel. It may cut into your rocker panel over time hence the tolerance is needed.

Running Boards

I just installed Factory running boards on my 2007 Tacoma. The part number for the ones I installed is PT212-35053. I also installed doorsill protectors at the same time, part number PT747-35051. Both these items are available from www.toyota-parts-dealer.com located in Virginia. They price the running boards for $247 and the doorsill protectors for $20. My Tacome X-cab was predrilled for the running boards which are held on by 6 bolts. These predrilled holes had plastic inserts to protect the holes. This installation took about twenty minutes. The doorsill protectors took longer because of sill cleaning necessary before installing the self adhesive doorsill protectors. I bought the black aluminum running boards instead of the tube type because I liked the look better, a matter of opinion. My truck is a basic Tacoma X-cab with only Option A.

do these stick out far enough to prevent door dings? also, is it made of that hard plastic material, similar to the bedliner?

Running Boards

They do stick out enough to help prevent door dings. They seem to be made of coated aluminum.

i think what you have is different from that part number - i believe the ones i'm talking about are made out of a bedliner type hard plastic material.

I also have the stock running boards. They stop most door dings but not all! Some large vehicles have doors that bulge at the top that makes it defeat the boards. Still...it is better than nothing.

Also, there is a rubber flap that is used between the board and the truck body. I think this just makes it look cleaner.

They're aluminum with some plastic caps on them. I'll have to check on the actual mounting hardware.
