Hey, you guys running Flowmaster 50 ( or i guess any other exhaust) are you just replacing the stock muffler. or if its a system, what size pipe? 2.5 would be ok?

I agree 100%. V8s are about the only engines that have great exhaust notes. All the sound bytes I heard for the Tacoma V6s sound no different than say the V6 Grand AMs from back in the day. Personally, I think it makes the truck sound cheesy. My 2 cents, but your mileage may vary. :D

I just called Midas and they quoted me $280 for a Flowmaster 50 Series installed. That is just the muffler. That seems freaking high.

I ended up going to a Mom and Pop shop. I was able to get a Universal Magnaflow 4x9x14 oval for $160 installed. Not sure what to think at this point. It seems really loud in the cab. I am hoping it simmers down after a bit. Just seems kind of loud overall. I am not sure if that is just my perception since I was use to the factory exhaust or what.

On the tacoma's, personally I vouch for the TRD catback. I love it on my truck and all I have is a k&n drop in. Sounds good, not over the top but it's there enough to know.

Also... v6's can sound great. 3000GT with TT Borla (Borla rock so much).

UPDATE: I ended up calling the shop back and told them that I wasn't happy with the muffler. I mentioned that I did some more research and found that the 5x8x18 was a better fit for my truck. The guy got all mad and said, "I'm not going to eat the cost of that muffler!!". I told I don't expect you too, but could we maybe work out a some kind of deal. He said he would order the muffler (part # 12256) which is a 5x8x18. In reality I think it is his fault since he was suppose to be the muffelr expert. I shouldn't have to search for the muffler I need, that's the job of the muffler shop. Hopefully this will make me happy....LOL!!!! It's the same muffler that the cat-back system comes with.

If you are going to get an aftermarket muffler it should be up to the buyer to research what it will sound like on the truck, the muffler shop will only install what you pick out. Unless you just drove in and left it up to them to pick out a muffler for you... even at that it would still fall on you bud. There are tons of different mufflers that make different sounds relative to your setup that a guy in the muffler shop won't know what kind of sound you want to acheive unless you tell him specifically.

See that is the thing though, I told him exactly what I wanted. I wanted a deeper tone, a little louder than stock without it sounding ricey. He then picked out the muffler. I got the exact opposite. Maybe I should just take this as a lesson learned and just pay the second $160 to hopefully get it sounding the way I want. As I mentioned the muffler I got this second time was the Magnaflow Universal oval 5x8x18 instead of the 4x9x14 which is currently on the truck. Using stock tubing.

Sorry but I completely disagree. The TRD catback does NOT sound ricey. It might not be a V8 rawr, but it's not ricey. The 3000GT's don't sound ricey either, and they're a 3.0L V6. For that matter, some of the exhaust kits on the 4cyl WRX's don't sound ricey either. They have a unique tone, but not a honda fart can tone. Same as our trucks, they don't sound rice, but they' don't sound like v8's either.

    Not necessarily......
My Flowmaster 50 doesn't sound ricey at all from the outside of the truck.

From the inside it sounds ricey - but I don't much care about that.

The point isn't to make it sound like something it ain't.....it's to make it sound better than what it does from the factory (no sound at all).

I think you just got too small of a muffler. I can't remember for sure but I think I have the 5x11x22 magnaflow and it is not that loud unless you get on it. Also has a nice tone when decelerating or cruising the neighborhood at 25 mph.

Go back to the shop, they may change it out for a small fee. Also, see if you can listen to different ones. The shop that I went to would dry fit several different mufflers and let me listen to them.

Yeah, that I am sure. I had the guy order a 5x8x18 since that is the one that comes with the cat-back system. After reading your post I am now worried I again got to small a muffler.:mad::mad:

need headers to make the rumble sound. The exhaust itself depending on brand will maybe give more of a grrr sound I guess. I have a gibson and it sounds not that far off from what the trd one sounds like. you can hear and feel it in low rpms and idle but freeway driving it sounds stock unless you floor it.

UPDATE 2: Ok so I went to the shop again today and was going to have them put on the 5x8x18. I ended up NOT doing that. The guys at the shop convinced me to drive around with it for a few days before I rush to judgment. They both commented that they thought it sounded good for a v6. They actually said mine is quiet compared to an actual loud exhaust. I might be experiencing what Janster mentioned above. It sounds ricey in the cab, but externally it sounds good. If it sounds good externally I can make myself live with the ricey sound inside.

I also had mentioned that I looked at doing a Flow 40 or 50 and they said those are way louder than the Mags. They also said they prefer the Mags over the Flows (they sell both). They said the Magnaflows are just a better constructed muffler compared to the Flowmasters and to them sound better. Thought it was interesting to hear their opinions.
