Sorry to read about this, I had a 1973 Datsun that rusted away like these pics. I would never imagine this would ever happen in a modern Toyota, salted roads or not.

    here is the bottom line

there is no mystery, there is no wiggle room

for scientific reasons the coating on certain frames was less resistant than toyota specified.
if you have rot and this frame batch, you get coating or replacement

whine all you want but if the frame is not one in the scope of the service campaign, you get nothing
except maybe goodwill from dealer or toyota. but since goodwill costs, you better hope hard

I had a choice between two used Tacoma's this spring. a 2007 in blue (loved the color) with 70K miles and a 2011 black with 80K. I really wanted the blue one but the frame (entire underside) was rust. I asked the dealership about it and they said it was rusty but did not warrant a replacement so it was sprayed instead. the rear axle was rust, the cross members were rust, the front skid plate was rust. They only sprayed the frame from what I could tell. I looked over the spray carefully and all they did was spray over the rust... They did not clean off the rust, treat the rust... nothing. It was already flaking off the frame. If that is the way all dealerships do it, I can't imagine the spray will do anything. The springs where shot also and the truck was on a "waiting list" for that fix, probably still is.

I ended up taking the 2011 because the frame was rust proofed from the get go and you could eat off it. by the time I made my decision the dealership with the blue one called back and said they would "re-treat" the frame... probably spray again over the spray that is over the rust. too little too late.

the funny thing was the stack of frames in the dealership service area. there had to be a dozen of them. this must be costing Toyota a ton.... the margins on the trucks can not be that much that they can eat the cost of a new frame and a weeks service and not lose money.

see my writeup on the krown treatment i just had done. I am extremely confident my truck is protected from rust, and i live in Ma. I will be doing this every year, and not worrying about rust. I know there are tons of different opinions on here about the best products for rust protection, but i am sold on krown. I watched and got talked through the entire process. Everything and i mean everything under my truck is glistening and coated with the stuff. Starts at post 892 edit: i am just now realizing that since doing the krown, my leafsprings no longer squeak:D

Dana Corp was forced to pay for the problems. They were the supplier and the company that fell short in building the frames correctly.

+1 for Krown. I had my rust-free 2011 coated immediately after purchase. Even after the very road salt heavy Winter season last year, there isn't even a spot of surface rust. Krown is an annual coating for about $140 that is well worth the cost given Toyota's total failure in rust protecting their frames.

Was told the same before the rust campaign started. Best bet is to trade it in at another dealer and don't mention it. It will go to auction and some dealership will buy it. Its considered a big boy auction, they know what they're buying.
