    Here is a rule of thumb. If the air coming from the closet vent to the evaporator is 30 to 40 degrees colder than the ambient temperature that it is taking in then the system is working correctly.

    The temperature will vary as much as 5 degrees as the compressor cycles on and off, but it should still hold an exhaust temperature of 30 to 40 degrees below ambient inlet temperature.

    At no time should the temperature coming out of the vent be at the freezing point of 32 degrees since that would mean your evaporator is freezing over. In fact at the vent anything lower than about 37 degrees can mean there is a problem.

    I am referring to the engine driven fan when I say mechanical fan. This fan is driven by the water pump...

    Thanks for the reply. :) Yes that is one factor when the condenser is not being cooled to the best it can be. Another is the fact that the compressor is running slower at idle, but hopefully no one is idling their systems and expecting top notch cooling in 90 plus degree temps. Also in areas where the humidity is very low, below 40%, the air conditioners will not work well regardless of how good they are.
