Here's the final project, painted black and with small eyebolts added to secure bungees for the rods. It's a very stable setup that did well after 2 hours of highway driving and some bumpy 4wheeling.

Did have one minor issue - the butterfly nuts on the frame brackets kept coming loose. A couple of lock nuts and lock washers should remedy that.

Just make sure your brackets are tight and secure. The flimsy bolts and wingnuts I originally used kept coming loose. I switched to 1/2" carriage bolts with locknuts and now it's good. Also, you can't really see it in the photos but I Gorilla glued all the joints and anchored them together with small screw. I'd hate for anyone to see their rods rolling down the highway!
