Honestly, if you saw it in person, you'd feel differently. Trust me I know. Imagine walking out to your truck that looks perfect white all over and then looking at the grill area that has an off-white/yellowish tint. It's quite noticeable in person and very ugly.

It's funny how lots of people are starting to notice this on their trucls as more become aware of it. I think it is the most obvious or noticeable on the lighter color trucks (white and silver) than the others. I think it is definitely a mixture of the parts being painted at a separate facility and the metal vs the plastic on the trucks. But like another person mentioned earlier in this thread, how can an AFTERMARKET provider make a grill surround that matches the super white color PERFECTLY but Toyota themselves can't???

No I never did. I couldn't even get them to approve the TSB springs, so if I couldn't get a known issue resolved, I wasn't gonna mess with an uncommon one.

Edit: I'm getting a new grille as a result of a wreck, so I'll check out the color matching on that one and try and update this.

Is the grill surround coming from Toyota or an aftermarket company?

Only thing is that there are still two small pieces (one below each headlight) that will still be that off white color even if the surround matches perfect. But I think it would still look a hell of a lot better!

Not reading this whole thread to see if this has been answered before or not. But it comes down to the way paint cures on plastic vs metal. Look at the bumpers on most vehicles, the color is slightly off, even from the factory. They can be painted at the same time, using the same batch of paint and come out slightly different.
I work at a body shop and I have to point this out all the time(before repairs). When they come to pick the vehicle back up is when they notice the slight difference.

Well maybe you can enlighten me a little more since you have experience with paint and body. How can an aftermarket company make a grill surround that matches EXACTLY to the paint color of the truck then, but Toyota claim its the plastic vs metal that is causing the varitation in color and they can't do anything about it?

I have a 2013 MGM Sport and the painted plastic parts (fender flares, handles, grille shell, etc) do have a slight color variance than the body (metal). I can only tell when I look at it from certain angles when the light hits it. Not a big deal to me. I've talked to a few painters and they said that when painting plastic and metal its hard to match up sometimes, even with the color code. I don't have experience with painting, just quoting what I've been told.

Does your grill shell seem to be a slightly duller or darker shade than the paint on the body of the truck where its metal?

Part of the problem is that the 040 super white has been out for so long that there is a lot of shade variations. When I took my scoop to get painted at a Toyota dealership they actually matched up the paint on my truck with a paint swatch to make sure it matches perfectly. If the grilles and other plastic parts are sprayed elsewhere the shade of the paint they are using could be a little off from where the trucks them selves are painted.

Well it sure seems like Toyota would make sure they have the same exact matching shade of the white that they are applying. If other aftermarket companys can match it exactly then why can't Toyota who built and painted the truck?

There is no way an aftermarket company who is only using a certain shade of 040 can perfectly match every Toyota out there since Toyota has several variations of the 040 out there.

So you believe that its actually a different shade of 040 or bc it is paint on plastic? The funny thing is, the bumpers are the same color as the rest of the truck and aren' the bumpers palstic like the grill surround? It's only the grill surround and the two small pieces below each headlight that are the same slightly off white color. The bumper and fender flares seem to match the color of the body perfect which are plastic too, so why not the grill surround?

Its probably a lil of both but if it were me I would make the dealership swap out the grill and the lower pieces.

Yea I'm going to bring up the issue to my local Toyota dealer who is doing some of my warranty work and I'm going to see what they say.

If they have a body shop I would go talk to someone in there and they can show you all the different shades of 040 and have them look at it.

It seems to be a darker shade. I recently had my tailgate handle painted, MGM. When I took it to my painter he told there was going to be a color variance. I replied that I have the paint code and he said it wouldn't matter, when painting metal and plastic your going to get different shades between the two.
