I called the service department at 430pm and it rang and rang. Couldn't get anyone to pick up. I guess I'll call tmrw and ask if they reflashed ecu. I'm guessing they did not. I was told that they scanned the truck but on my receipt it just states "no problem found. Noise octane related"

What's your gas tank at? Putting at least a half tank of premium in it is a cheap way to find out if they're right or wrong.

I filled it up after work with 87 non-ethanol. Won't know until tmrw morning if it made a difference. Before that it was just below 1/4 tank.

Maybe I had you confused, I meant for you to try filling up with 91+ Octane non ethanol fuel. If I was not clear my apologies. I'm not sure you'll be able to notice the difference between ethanol and non ethanol fuel, other than you'll get better mpg on the non ethanol stuff.

Dealership did not reflash ECU. After driving 40 miles on non-ethanol gas rattle still continues at 1200-1500 rpms. Will try premium octane gas when I go through this tank. I have been actively reading other threads on TW and I must say it has me disheartened. Cannot believe how big of a problem this is.

The non-ethanol gas was 87 octane btw. I tried it first.

Yeah it sucks and is a big concern of mine too. It makes me wonder how much damage has been done to my engine. I haven't heard the ping since switching to 89 but I usually have the radio on, plus it just started getting really hot in my area a few weeks ago.

If you only ran it for 40 miles with the new gas... the new gas may not have had time to work its way through the lines. I'd try 89 on the next tank or two then move up to 91+ if you don't notice an improvement.

I'd go right to 91+ first, to see if it fixes the problem, then if it does fix the problem back off grades until it pings. Then you know what you can fill up with. I doubt this is doing much damage to most of the engines that do it, all motors are built for some ping. If you go through those threads you'll find a lot of guys that have had this problem for over 100 K. I wouldn't worry to much :).

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
Have you had this TSB done?

Did the problem go away with 91+ octane gas?

So were these engines designed to run on 91+?
I'm getting this noise also and my truck is 9 days old. I just switched to 89 on the first fillup hoping it would change. I thought it was lack of oil initially, but that checks out. It did seem to get a bit better, but I'll get more in depth when I get home.
Obscur the TSB is filed...if 89 or 91 even 93 can't fix it, I'll definitely let Toyota know, I mean I'm only at 816 miles. And can these run on 93 safely?

Buying high Octane gas won't harm an engine, it just won't utilize it as well as an engine tuned for it. Just make sure it's not 93 octane gas with 20% ethanol in it. Low ethanol or no ethanol 93 is the only way to go safely in our trucks. High ethanol fuels will damage many of the fuel system parts in the Tacoma.

In my experience the stock 4.0L 1GF-RE likes 91 premium and has a pinging issue with 87 octane gas. Lots of other forums on here agree with that.

    Noted...thanks:D
Will definitely like to make sure this issue is taken care of though.
I know if higher octane can't fix it, I'll have a copy of the TSB in hand at the dealer to see what they can do.
    Thanks.

UPDATE: I have filled the truck up twice with 93 octane 10% ethanol fuel. Pinging has subsided a good deal however every now and then I still get a slight pinging under load uphill. I just saw the tsb and believe I will bring this to the dealers attention.

OP, I have the same issue with my truck. It's the gas. Let me know how the dealer visit goes with the reflash.
