Probably a stupid question, but I have a 2010 SR5 & 2014 base. The 2010 has an oem back up cam, but has the almost worthless 1" screen in the rear view mirror.

My 2014 is a base, but has the touch screen and wiring at the tailgate, along with rear camera prompt when the touch screen first starts. Was wondering if in theory I could remove the camera and wiring from the 2010 truck and plug direct into the 2014, and have everything work.

if im not mistaken the 09-11 cameras are 4 wires while the 12-14 are a 6 wire camera

My 2012 Toyota Service manual electrical schematics show the 2012 as a four (4) wire camera.

I may give it a try tomorrow when I get home from work, then report back. It blows not having a cam on my '14, and the one in the mirror on the 2010 is 95% useless. So hopefully it works.

Would love to get a camera from a wrecked vehicle for a project I have in mind. Would need the camera and wiring to the connector if anyone has one cheap.

You will have to take the tailgate harness from your 2010 and swap it over to the 14. I bought a used oem camera and harness from a 2010. The 2010 is a 4 pin connection in the tailgate while the 2014 is a 6 pin. The harness under the truck is 4 pin on both. I swapped the 6 pin harness for the 4 pin with no problems. All the tabs that hold it place are in the same location and connected up no problems with harness under truck. Camera works great just no guide lines.

/\ This post is correct, I pulled both tailgates apart only to find out the 2014 plug is different than the 2010. I didn't bother trying to swap the entire harness, as I was pressed for time and wasn't sure how big of a project that would have been.

I wonder what they changed in the 2014 if there is a 4 pin harness under the truck, but a 6 pin harness in the tailgate itself... The camera is only using 4 pins as there are only 4 in the harness that the 6 pin cable plugs into.

An alternative is to shave down the 2010 camera to fit the 2014 connector, as shown here:

Abandon the mirror idea, do as Zboy mentioned, I did that in my '13. Ebay has kits for $70 and you having the touch screen radio, you already have the video input to do it. Having it in the radio is the way to go, no doubt.

I have 2013 Tacoma with the rear backup camera and works fine. Problem is I'd like it on full time not just in reverse. Not sure if it's powered near the camera from the backup lamp or near the monitor from the fuse box area. Any help with this alteration would be appreciated. Thanks
