I just got a 2014 double cab skyline silver love it. Only thing I'm not happy with is the sound. I don't want to replace the head unit. for sure right now.

I'd like to throw in some speakers for even a modest improvement.

    Is this possible?

    Thanks

Yes sir! You have the option of 6 and a half all the way around. Or 6x9 in the front door and 6 and a half in the back doors

You will need adapters to mount aftermarket speakers. I got mine from Amazon.com. That is one of the cheapest places for them.

Yes this is very doable and isnt that hard. I agree that the factory systems arent that great. I have a 2006 TRD Sport with the JBL package and I was not impressed at all.

I think you should. I'm going to so the same thing in my Challenger. I like the nav/dvd face that the car came with so just going to swap out the speakers for now without an amp.

I know you mentioned not wanting to replace the head unit, but I couldn't believe the difference in how much better the system sounded with a new aftermarket head unit. I still plan on replacing the speakers but this has been "good enough" for now.

I'm probably a little out of my knowledge base as it's been years since I was into car audio, but I would think it would be a bit difficult to find a set of aftermarket speakers that will work well with a stock HU without adding an amp into the system.

I think you'd need to determine what the RMS of the HU is and go from there. If you buy speakers that can handle a ton of power and underpower them, they're not going to sound particularly good. You'd be better off getting a set of speakers for lower wattage with better SQ.

Speakers will help, but just adding an amp for more power will probably see a bigger improvement even with stock speakers.

Power has a lot to do with it and the reason why after market HU's usually sound better is because they have higher power outputs.

Replaced only the speakers on my last Taco. Is it a good idea? Not really if you want any volume, but yes if you want low volume with great sound. The stock head unit didn't have enough power to fully enjoy my new speakers.
With my new truck, I'm going leave it stock until I'm ready to upgrade the whole system.

    Yes
You will yield far better results getting a new head unit vs new speakers. the OE deck is very weak and does not have the RMS wattage to power aftermarket speakers.

Try this. I did a complete install but listened to it in stages. The Polks did sound very good off the stock head unit. Far better sound definition and clarity. (Not in this thread) That being said the sound is incredibly better with the head unit and an amp. Hope this link to my install helps.

This is utter bullshit. The stock speakers are just total crap. There's no way to make them sound good and replacing the head unit without changing speakers is an excercise in masterbation without a happy endng. Better speakers with an amp is a quantum improvement using the stock head unit. I'm not saying that the stock unit is the shit, but it's not your grandma's record changer either. The stockers are built by Harmon, as in Harmon-Kardon, or JBL. The output seems clean enough, but does lack power. An amp is a must have with a speaker upgrade. How elaborate you want to be with the speaker swap is up to you. Amps can be as simple as an Alpine Powerpak behind the dash, or 1000 watts under the seat. You can add a sub, or not. Speakers are all over the map. Theories vary on how to build your sound system and current thinking seems to favor building from the source out. I've never bought that idea. I think that you should build from the ears out. The greatest source in the world can't make up for shitty reproduction. Let your ears guide your upgrade.

If you choose to replace just the speakers and plan to run it that way for a while, look for the most efficient speakers you can find. This will turn the low power supplied into the most sound. Do listen to them first though if you can, highly efficient and highly accurate are not (always) the same.

Agree with most of what's been posted; the stock taco speakers are the cheapest, crappiest speakers Toyota could have possibly sourced from some dark 3rd world corner of the planet. I saved mine just to show the occasional person who would have an interest. The "rear speakers" (mine is an access cab) are literally wired napkins placed in the headliner - you would be hard pressed to hear any coherent sound coming from them if you could isolate them. Just garbage.

Replacing the head unit first and leaving the stock speakers in place would be like tearing up a stack of $20 bills and flushing them down a toilet. Speakers 1st, then head unit if you need more.

Literally anything you could buy at Walmart would be a nice upgrade. I went with a decent pair of 6X9 JBLs and the difference was huge. These were way more than the stock head could feed, so I replaced that next with a basic kenwood unit.

A night & day difference for about $300 total, easily installed myself and I suck at installing electrical devices of any kind.
