Thanks all. It was a blast and I'd never done a trip like this. If you go, make sure you allow for some time to soak up the places you find (or make sure your mindset is made up to leave quickly).

The schedule was tight for us so it was really tough to just go and explore back roads and find remote places to camp. We were driving so much already and adding a few hours drive on dirt to find camp spots just wasn't too appealing. I wound up staying at the dreaded "campgrounds" most nights.

Setting up camp and taking down camp got old real fast, especially for the gf. We wound up getting a room on a few nights. Especially since we didn't want to setup in the dark (if I was with "the guys" it might have been a different story).

I would have liked to have done more research before the trip, but just didn't have the time. Would definitely suggest heavy research before leaving if you have the time to do so.

LOL. A week late! I was back home for two days and had enough, I'm back out in the mountains, in the Sierra Nevada's (in CA). Hoping tomorrow I get up to my favorite camp site which I have not been to in 12 years or so.

Cool thing about this place is the road up is high clearance 4x4. Hopefully will have some more cool pics soon!

So, as I was saying...back into the mountains I go. I decided to head back to one of my favorite camp sites up in the Sierras. I went to this lake back in 2000, always wanted to go back and finally did.

    Headed to dirt.

    Now in dirt.

Airing down the tires. It's a 2+ hour drive with the final leg being the roughest. Lots of baby heads / rocks, real slow going.

First time out camping for the dog, he was freaked out for a bit. lol

Hiked up over the hill to the back side like (which had better fishing back in the day and the guy at the local tackle shop confirmed). But I found a dry lake...damnit. Hiking at 10,000 ft. sucks.

Next morning I got up early before the winds started and looked down into the lake from above.

    Target acquired.

By the time I got back, the trip meter went up to 4,700 miles. I'm done driving for a while!

Too late to do any good but if you were at/near the McAtee Bridge fishing access you were only about 20-30 minutes from some great camping spots in the trees.

I just got back from my cross-country trip in June. I started planning about 8 months before. I just opened a blank page on the computer and if I thought of something I wanted to see or needed to remember something to take with me, I would just type it on the blank page. Had a pretty long list a few days before leaving. OP, that's a pretty odd coincidence. I put around 3,800 miles on the odometer during my trip. Total ended up being over 6,000 because the actual camping trip was 3,800. I drove from West Virginia to Phoenix, AZ but drove north thru Michigan, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and then Arizona. Just a straight shot home on the way back. I am planning on another trip next June. Got a little chilly camping in the Rockies, 31 degrees one nite in Silverton, CO one nite. I left the middle of May so I figured I would wait a month or so to let the temps warm up a bit in the Rockies. That million dollar highway in Colorado is something everyone should experience.

Nice trip, I went for 3 days over the 4th, pictures to be posted later today. I don't want to deal with some stuff the day after I got back either.
