    Airbags are like a parachute,

If its not there when you need it, you may never need it again.

So is that sensor under the drivers seat? Hard to tell by that diagram in the hyperlink. Just curious cause I've had my 2 meter radio under my drivers seat for years now! :/

The link posted for the "used airbags" doesn't mean they're repacked. If you read the second paragraph they say they salvage the unused bags from a vehicle. For example, in a front collision the side bags may not go off, they salvage those and resell them.

It's under the door sill. The plastic piece you step on to enter the truck. Unlike the front sensors that are "smart" (vehicle has to be traveling so fast, pitch and yaw sensors, etc) the side curtain airbags just have a "shock" sensor. It appears to be quite sensitive.

    Just my .02 here

In fire school they taught us that even a car charger for a cell phone can backfeed enough juice to deploy an air bag. So you folks reading at home, disconnect the battery and also unplug any accessories you may have.

Sorry for your luck OP, good luck.

OP said radio was on, so key in the ign and in the acc position.

If you are correct no need to unplug battery, but find a different source for tunes.

No offense, but I can make a website and claim anything I want on it too. How do you guarantee that those bags are indeed OEM and are undamaged? Would you be willing to put your family's lives on the line to save a few bucks? I wouldn't especially with the cases of Chinese airbags throwing hot shrapnel upon being deployed.

OP already put in a claim with his insurance so let him pay his deductible and get something that he knows he can rely on. There are things I would cut corners on, but airbags is not one of them.

Doh! Thanks. I guess I better disconnect my battery soon and check my power wires running to my radio to make sure they're no where near that thing! I have them run under that kick panel to the underside of my driver's seat to my radio.

Call your insurance company and let them handle it. CarFax could care less about it as its not a collision and should not affect resale. Installing used airbags could leave you at risk for a new owner to take legal action against you IF they have an accident and they did not go off.

GET NEW AIRBAGS.... Why take a chance? You will always wonder if your protected. Now or for the next owner.

Is everybody sure all insurance covers this? It may be an extra rider that needs to be taken out. I'm going to check and see if my company would fix this. I am sure it is not a cheap fix.

OP - could you describe how / where they deploy through the headliner or add some pictures showing it?

I ask because I ran a wire from my dome light down the drivers side B pillar for footwell lighting and now I'm worried if mine deploy the bag will rip the wire out and add injury.

Just hoping to learn from your experience and determine if I need to reroute that wire.

    Thanks!

I just checked my policy and it does NOT cover accidental air-bag deployment. I'll bet this is common through out the industry. I'm going to check to see what it will cost to cover them.

I don't think I'd buy one, but that's not the point. Someone suggested that they're repacked, previously deployed, airbags. I was simply clarifying.

When I was buying my truck, the dealer told me the side airbags will also deploy if the truck gets tilted sideways beyond a certain angle and there is a switch to turn it off so it does not deploy say if you are rock crawling. Perhaps a sensor got tilted.

OP... Good luck with filing that under insurance. I would seriously doubt they will cover it. Air Bags are EXPENSIVE to replace and are sometimes the determining factor over whether a vehicle is totaled or not. Not saying that about yours since it will obviously not be totaled.

On a side note. As most have said on here: Anytime you are doing ANY kind of electrical work on your vehicle ALWAYS unplug the battery. That being said. Airbags work off a capacitor and even though you have disconnected the battery the capacitor can hold a charge for up to 10 mins (sometimes longer). I hate to pull up on a vehicle accident and the airbags haven't deployed. We always cut the battery then depending on the severity of the accident is how we approach the removal of the patient.

Keep us informed on the outcome and I hope you have good luck with it. (Stay away from the refurbished airbags btw)
