Will the transmission not allow the truck to be in motion while shifting from reverse to forward?
I've done this a couple of times, it kills the engine. Anyone else find this out.

I thought it was funny it would kill the engine.

Probably not good for the trans but maybe 2nd gens have a "defense" for the trans which is why it shuts down. I've done it a few times when in a hurry and it stays on but jerks into 1st since I shifted into drive before coming to a complete stop in reverse.

The A750 series transmissions are not designed for quick forward to reverse selections. When engineers designed the transmission , they expect everyone to come to a complete stop before going in the opposite direction . Considering all the moving parts ( approx 200 parts )within the transmission having to obey your commands and begin turning the opposite way ....the transmission will not tolerate forward to reverse for long before you start breaking planetaries and spraggs .
There are some front end loaders that are designed to select reverse or forward at a slow speed but it is still not a good practice .
To answer your question , when you select reverse while the truck is still in forward motion , the valve body in the transmission says WTF ? I am not designed to do this but my driver is commanding it . The valve body isnt given the time to properly exhaust oil from the forward application in order to give you reverse.
Not a good practice to follow

Why don't they program the ECM to not shift until motion ceases?

They can program the ecm , they already do it when selecting forward motion . When shifting the transmission lever into drive range , the ecm tells the transmission to select 2nd gear rather than first gear . Unfortunately when selecting reverse , its all mechanical and Aisn Warner hasnt spent the engineering bucks to come up with hydraulic buffers to accomodate the few drivers who operate their vehicles this way .

Police cars usually have buffers and abuse valves to prevent damage .

It's not a common practice that I do sometimes I'm in a hurry and don't give it a thought. And so I look like real jackass when I'm fumbling around to restart the engine.
It was just a question to pick your brain on, kinda knew it was a bad practice.
    Thanks for the info.
