Does anyone have a picture of a transmission pan to show people the difference? That would be helpful.

As in dark black or just a tad darker than brand new? If the second, that is normal. It's usually so clear I can barely see it on the dipstick when I first change it. A few days later it has gotten a little darker already.

I don't know about the running sluggish. Are you sure it is different? I know everytime after I change oil in a vehicle I am patting myself on the back for the accomplishment (and maybe I've had a couple beers to reward myself) then I always seem to think the engine might be running just a tad smoother for at least a couple days. But never worse... I am fairly certain a half quart over is not going to cause that.

Happens when I change plugs too, but after a couple days I come back to the reality it is running exactly the same.

After thinking about it, how long have you had this truck and how many miles on it? If there's a lot of miles on the engine, I am thinking possibly excess blowback from the engine driving oil up into the air intake possibly causing hesitation or skipping.

I had a Mercury Sable doing one time after 140K miles or so. Always ran smooth as a top then suddenly started skipping and I found the PVC hose was always filling with oil spray.

Not normal. I change my oil every 5000KM and it comes out the same colour it went in.

If its coming out black its not normal. you're not filtering probably.

Would the not filtering properly be due to the toyota filters because I took her there till the 96000 to get the oil change and when I changed the oil filter it was tight as a m'f I had to bend it with some channel locks before it would come loose. Now I use the K&n oil filter

Why do you need an oil change if it's the same color? Also, all of my oil has always been black. On all of our vehicles. No one has ever thought it was weird

What type of oil are you using?? I want that oil

I have heard about that gunking up your engine... but that was just from one person, (albeit the manager of O'Reilly's) so I stick with Mobil 1. If it doesn't change color, good for you. Is that full synthetic or synthetic blend? Can't tell

Castrol GTX with a Wix filter. You change oil because the compounds in the oil break down and/or filter stops filtering not based on colour.

If you do an oil analysis you can see that oil that looks clean will be worn out and some oils will look black may still be ok if they were filtered properly.

Oil changes are cheap insurance. I do my engine oil every 5000km, transmission fluid every 60 000km, and axles once a year in this rig.

In my offroad rigs I do Engine oil 3 times a summer, and axles 3 times a year(spring, mid summer and fall)

Air filter I do every second oil change or sooner depending on how much camping I do.

What do you do to the axle

I am a noob to maintenance. We bought my truck at 60K miles and I DOUBT the 60K maintenance was done... I am coming on 100K now. the only maintenance I have done is oil changes and ONE air filter. Probably need to get on that. Not to threadjack, but can someone please link me to what I need to do to fix this problem of no maintenance and get my truck where it needs to be? That should include tranny fluid I'm pretty sure and I have read about zerks but I have no idea what they are...

As for what you said about oil: Interesting, I did not know that. If what you say is true, however, why is it bad that the oil is a different color?

No you don't want oil that stays clean too long. Motor oil not only lubricates and cools the internal engine parts, it also suspends contaminants and neutralizes acids and other fancy stuff. Oil staying clean too long means it's not cleaning your engine and it's not suspending the nasty stuff that results from burning gasoline. So I definitely want to see my oil getting discolored, gradually, as the miles rack up. That way I know the nasty stuff is leaving my engine along with the used oil. New oil should discolor a little right away because there's always about a half quart +/- of oil that does not drain out of an engine.

Actually it is normal for the oil to be darker. Combustion gases along with carbon deposits will make their way past the piston rings and eventually into the engine oil. That's where the majority of the "black" or darker color comes from. There are other factors but it is NORMAL for used motor oil to be darker in color. In order to filter the "color" out you'd need a really good and big filter that could trap the smaller particles. Typically the smaller the particles a filter can catch the slower it filters.

And WOW..... I've never seen an oil change be so involved.

TOvar28, I'm quite sure you are fine. I stop worrying about it and drive it.
