I think I've just been convinced to keep my headlights stock, to ensure the most reliable operation possible.

Sure. You don't have to answer if you don't want, but I'm still gonna post my observations.

Actually, I was looking for a more generalized answer. Not why they don't meet the technical specs of the law. Which is why I specified the "spirit" of the law.

IMO they provide more than adequate light for the driver, don't blind other drivers, and altogether are just as effective as OEM projector housings. "How are they dangerous for either the driver or other drivers, and so violate the spirit of the law" is really what I'm asking.

 No one made you click on this. You chose to come in here and be a Richard Head.

    OP

Like most have said, if you plan on running HID's do a proper Retrofit. HID's in stock housings will blind other drivers and do not put out proper lighting. I'm running LED's in mine and couldn't be happier. Much cheaper with a proper cut off and pure white light.

I modified my 2013 Tacoma with a 55W high/low HID kit from DDM. I was pleased with the results. My main issue with the OEM lights was the light pattern, especially with high beams as I felt like I was driving into a tunnel (intensity straight ahead but not so bright off to the sides). I tried higher wattage (100W high/55W low) halogen bulbs, but this didn't help with the pattern.

The HID option worked well for me. There is good light spill in both high and low beams, and I think the low beams are reasonably adjusted to avoid glare for oncoming drivers (although there is no definitive "line" like in some OEM HID systems). Below is a picture (taken on manual) to show the light differences.

While your pictures look pretty good it is pretty much unanimously agreed that running HID's in stock housings is not a good idea without doing a retrofit. The light "scatter" whether you believe it or not will blind other drivers or at the very least piss them off. From you're pictures above it appears the light scatter is way off to both sides of the truck. That is not normal. Stock headlights are not designed for HID bulbs and never were intended to run them. I would highly recommend not doing this unless you were going to Retro them. That is the only sure way to make sure that you are getting the correct pattern without causing issues with oncoming traffic even if you think you aren't.

I'm running LED's in mine and the light pattern is much more condensed much like stock with a nice cut off line. Camera taken on manual also.

Low beam. Not nearly as much light scatter. Notice you can barely see the fence on the right hand side.

High beam. More light scatter but still shining mostly straight down the road.

    So much glare in here.

    Bring on the proper retrofit!

We even have an ongoing group buy for a complete retrofit kit for under $250. No glare included, unfortunately. :(

Nothing is wrong with it--it's an LS430 projector.
