I've had 3 other people drive my truck and all of them have come back saying the clutch feels weird. One drives a wrx , another drives a bronco II with a 350 dropped in, and the other was my dad whose last standard was 3 years ago and that was a freightliner. So all walks of clutch life have said it feels different. I've driven all of theirs and I agree it is different but don't know why. Not paranoid just looking for opinions :)

    Lets compare:

    Tacoma
    Subaru WRX Car
    Bastardized Ford Bronco II
    and a Tractor Trailor rig

WOW! Most Make Cars and Trucks are different some in subtle ways others in major ways. If it doesn't bother you don't worry about it.

I have two standard Toyotas. One a Corolla and one a Tacoma and they are both different in the clutch. As for an opinion, just drive it and don't try and compare it with another vehicle that is different than it is. If it is different than other Tacoma's of the same year than have it looked at.

what all these guys have said. All the vehicles your comparing are vastly different, so the clutch most likely would be as well. My Tacoma's clutch is very different than my Honda's.

I think the general consensus here is, don't worry about it. The 6spd Tacomas def. have their quirks.

Ex wife's '06 Fusion and a buddies '92(?) Isuzu both drove like race cars compared to the Taco.

My old '84 3 speed ford had a tighter feel to it, if I remember right. I might not.

My '94 Mazda MX-6 was slicker than goose poop, from what people who have stumbled on goose poop tell me.

Taco has a long depress, made even more obvious when my Dad stalled it out and couldn't get it started. He thought it was all the way to the floor; there is a lot of "dead space" between engaged and out.

I still like it better than an auto, most days. 3-5-10-20-5-3-10mph on the interstate during a gadzooks rainstorm for an hour would be the exception.

    Your mileage will vary.

I have had a 1999 Hyundai Accent, 2001 Hyundai Tiburon, 2006 Ford Ranger, and a 2011 Subaru WRX that all had different feeling clutches. I drove my buddy's 2012 Tacoma SR5 and his clutch was different than all the cars I had too. The nature of a clutch is that it will always feel different because the springs, pressure plates, throwout bearings, etc can vary with each install.

The worst clutch I've ever used was in friends 2006 STi with a stage 3 race clutch. There was no play room with that, the clutch was either engaged or disengaged. Haha.

They are a little funky, I noticed the clutch pedal moves slightly to the left when first depressing it, so that defiantly feels strange.

During my test drive.........I didn't like how it shifted at all.

I've owned many manual vehicles including owning a 96 tacoma (manual) for 5 years.

    That's why I bought an automatic. :D

    More than I can afford
    Quirks is putting it mildly.
I am not happy with mine. Truck has under 50,000 on it, trans has ~10,000 on it, was replaced by PO under warranty with a brand new factory transmission.

500,000 miles of driving manual transmission equipped toyota trucks and I still cannot get this thing to shift smoothly or quickly. I have ground 2nd gear more times in the 2,000 miles I have put on this thing then all the miles in the rest of my trucks.

I added a TRD short shifter and changed to Redline synthetic gear oil, helped some but still not great.
Found a fair bit of metal shavings and a few good sizes slivers on the drain plug so I am not too optimistic about the durability of the trans.

I know URD is working on transmission adapters for other 6 speeds, I am also debating an auto trans swap.

In what way does it feel weird?

Just had mine replaced with Exedy clutch and URD throw out bearing. It feels a lot lighter to depress, grabs a lot lower in the pedal travel and overall I think it is smoother including the shifter. However I drove it less than 50 miles so far since it got installed just last week and it is not my DD.

47K on mine no problems what so ever I can shift it as smoothly as an automatic shifts both up and down if you push the clutch to the floor it won't grind in any gear either up or down.

This is same experience I have. It's the worst manual trans Toyota has ever built, but I will live with anything over an auto in a truck.
OP, there is some adjustment to the engagement. Search on youtube, I recall seeing a video on an Xrunner for clutch adjustment.

I have never had an automatic in any truck I have ever owned there is nothing wrong with the 6 spd it's the same trans that's in the fancy Cadillac that costs twice as much.

I've been test driving looking to purchase a new Tacoma over the upcoming months. I've never owned anything but manual transmissions.

The Tacomas I've driven thus far with MTs all felt like crap. The throws were huge, and transmissions felt awfully clunky. I'm now thinking of looking for one with the short throw shifter (Baja) but finding one to test drive has been impossible.

I'm also considering an auto. I've also decided to wait until the fall and look at the new GMC Canyon or the Chevy Colorado. I'm hopeful that the availability that the end of the model year and the availability of competitive 2015 mid-sized pickups will have an impact on the price of the Tacos and the willingness of the local dealership to even try to be a little helpful.
