My experience has been that furry animals are not impressed by the horn. I have had better luck by flashing the headlights.

If you see a deer by the side of the road, it is planning to run in front of you. If you start to slow down when you see it, you may be able to avoid it.

I was watching the preview of a show about Alaska one day. As a moose was walking onto the highway, the BMW owner laid on the horn. He did not brake, did not try to avoid the moose, he just laid on the horn. He ran into it, of course.

A deer ran into a motorcyclist in my area recently. The motorcyclist was 21 (he died).

i go with the deer whistles, they work about 80% of the time. When a deer gets spooked, especially during rut, they just take off. during rut the bucks only got one thing on their mind and it ain't listening for no whistles .
don't have the resources at the moment for one of them huge steal bumpers, but they are nice though.
the other trick that i like to do when on a 2 lane road, is if there is someone behind you slow down just enough so that person wants to pass you, let them pass by and use them to run interference. :D

I live in serious deer country as well. Have hit one before when I owned a Jetta, nearly totaled it.

The best advice I have ever got is aim for the tail. They don't use reverse very often.

You've never hit one, have you? I hit one in my pos ford years ago on the interstate, the front exploded and the deer went up and completely over my entire car. Even a small dele is still going to be 80-90 lbs and that's going to do a lot of damage if you're going any speed.

Not previously mentioned, but if you see one deer, especially a doe, slow down and be careful - good chance there are more behind the one you see.

Since they are only a handful of bucks and people swear by them, I think I might get a deer whistle.

People swear by magnetic bracelets and 1/4 ounce of copper wire in a pair of socks making them feel 20 years younger and not clinically obese, too.

Does the scientific study show the result as linear regression, in that with 1/2 oz of copper in my socks I can go back to being a kid again?
