    The area I am in here in NC has quite a lot of deer as well and I will almost always see one on my way home from work during the 30 mile drive if I am working nights.

    I'd also suggest getting a LED bar or a larger light source as the Soltek's I had on my last truck paid dividends plenty of times when I was able to see deer 1/2 mile up the road so I had time to slow down.

    Granted this only works if you are planning to drive in areas of little to no traffic.

    Perhaps, with some of the advice given here, we should be investing in bigger, louder horns, and auto dimmers for the headlights.

    in fact avoidance technique would suggest a loud horn, running off an interval timer, say every 15-30 seconds, and drive with your headlights off would be the ultimate best practice for driving at night when there is wildlife around.

    Can't be dim, it'll make them even more attracted if the light is animated.. What about infrared windshields? Then you can drive lights out all the time and be safe from deer AND zombies.

    Can you make a deer whistle but car size? With infrared? Then you'd just need to bolt on a seat and some tires and voila. Completely cloaked.

    There was a woman killed by a deer thrown through the windshield in my hometown years ago. The deer was hit by another vehicle on the other side of a divided highway and thrown clear across a 40' median (I'm not exaggerating- 40 feet!) before hitting her.


    I've employed this strategy for years, especially at night.

    some of the bus drivers at the company i worked for swore by the whistles they said the whistles would make the deer lift thier heads and the head lights would catch thier eyes at night

    Deer lift their heads when alerted, a car driving up to them at 40 MPH makes them lift their head as easy as a whistle on your bumper does. I can fart on a hillside 250 yards from a deer, and they'll lift their head.

    Placebo effect is always cheap, because it has no value.

    The deer around here (and there's a lot) don't care about horns, lights, whistles or any other doodad you try to use to scare them. They're so used to traffic and humans they just don't care. Best advise is if you know there's deer around where you're driving slow down, keep an eye on both sides of the road and get a good set of driving/ foglights to aluminate the sides and further down the road more.

    Tried to find info on 'deer diving into light' as i've never observed that. Could be just because i've never observed that, that doesn't mean it doesn't occur.

    Here's what I found so far. This is consistent with my experience.

    "Q: Why do deer get transfixed by car headlights and just stand there in harm's way?

    "Deer are crepuscular," said David Yancy, a deer biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

    Their activity peaks within an hour or so on either side of sunrise and sunset, so their vision is optimized for very low light. When a headlight beam strikes eyes that are fully dilated to capture as much light as possible, deer cannot see at all, and they freeze until the eyes can adjust.

    "They don't know what to do, so they do nothing," Yancy suggested.

    Continuing research at the University of Georgia on whitetail deer vision suggests that by human standards, deer are legally blind. A researcher interviewed in the September/October issue of Arkansas Wildlife estimated their vision at 20/200: Where a person with normal eyesight can discern an object's details at 200 yards, deer need to be within just 20 yards away. (They are better adapted to detecting motion.)

    Deer-car collisions peak with the fall breeding season, with males moving around to find receptive females."

    Shutting off your headlights, and making noise should therefore avoid the 'freeze' reaction to the light, and the noise should make the deer react, however that means that your own eyes have to suddenly adjust to the lack of light as well, and also takes away brain processing power to react to the defensive driving actions of slowing and steering to avoid a collision. The 'freeze' reaction is helpful if the deer are on the side of the road. My experience in hitting deer (3x) is
    1) no reaction time available, deer jumped over a no-post curb right into the truck. Killed deer.
    2) braked and steered to avoid collision; deer continued on its path, unaffected by lights/horn and ran into the side of the truck. Deer survived.
    3) braked to avoid collision; deer continued to run across road, and was hit at low speed, rolling on the ground, and getting back up.
    At no time did the deer stare and dive into the light, in all 3 cases the deer was already in motion and continued its direction of travel.

    I've had lots of near misses. Usually one of the herd raises their head at the sound/light of the vehicle. Most continue grazing along the roadway, rather oblivious.

    Flicking the headlights off for two seconds is a big deal? Man, you must not have done much driving. Which is why I have questioned your overall driving skills. I'm not trying to demean you, but I think it's obvious you don't have a lot of driving skills or experience either onroad or offroad. Pretty much just a smartass.

    You haven't stated what you do when you see a deer at night, have you? That's two different things. You make the smartass comments, so huggable you little cutiepie.
