I personally would def get the UG. I guess if you constantly are towing you might want the trans temp gauge so it may be easier to get the SG for that. But otherwise this does pretty much everything else for a fraction of the price. If you do get one be sure to get a mounting bracket for it. A buddy (Trailcat) gave me one (horizontal bracket?) that he didnt use and it worked out perfect. I have mine mounted up in the left top corner of my windshield (where the oil change stickers usually go)with the wire running inside the pillar so you dont see it at all.

My method was to Velcro it standing up on the top of my steering column. You can fish the wire down next to the column and into the ECU port as well.

Rick, I thought about doing it the way you did but didn't because I want to be able to easily remove it from my truck to scan another vehicle, such as if my wife's truck throws a CEL. Last winter her battery died suddenly and after jumping it I ran the UG on it for a few minutes just to be sure the alternator output was as it should be.

Bone stock 2010 5 lug, 4cyl auto. Mods include step bars, light bar, stereo (2 amps, subs, box).

Ultragauge..I use instant and avg MPG, distance and time to empty, voltage.

Wish I could get ambient temp.

Thats a good spot for it. I wish they made them so the cord would unplug from the unit. Then we could get an extra cord and swap vehicles easily for road trips or whatever. But for $60 I'm not complaining.

Yup, or maybe an extension cord so you can just pull up next to the other vehicle..but yeah like you said, the price is right and just a little ingenuity..

Just took a trip up to South Carolina (5hr) and kept an eye on the UG.
Going about 80mph with URD CAI, also just recently installed throttle body spacer (hey i got it for super cheap:) ) using Mobile 1 full synthetic.

Engine Temp: 195(avg)-200(at idle after pulling off highway)
    Intake: 92-98 (ambient 93-97)
    Battery Volt: 13.85V avg
    Avg MPG: 15.0

Edit: Just took a longer road trip and edited data.

Will the ScanGuage II or Ultra Guage read transmission temps?

What are you using to measure ambient temperature? It's impossible for the CAI to COOL air. It showing lower is just instrumentation inaccuracy / uncertainty.

I have the URD TCAI, always at or +1 DegF > ambient unless idling.

Try cleaning your MAF if you haven't already.

Yeah I'm sure its just an inaccuracy on the ambient temp probably. I'm using the temp on the rear view mirror for ambient.

Too soon to say that my friend..... Its a matter of how hard people try. So far I'm the only one I see working with the ultra gauge MX to get the trans code for us.

    Don't sell ultra gauge short

    scangauge 2
    ultra gauge MX

Not at all, I have the UG and am very happy with it. Just that so far as I know the trans temp isn't there (yet at least) which I've heard is a reason some go with the SG.

What do you mean about the MX? Not sure I follow

What I'm saying is that ultragauge may have the ability to read trans temps..... Just that not enough time and effort have been used on the MX.... Once found on the MX, a reflash may allow the ultra to read trans.
